Help!

Came home last night. Turned on the trusty computer and up came a long message, white on black saying: We apologize for the inconvience but Windows did not start successflly... with several option to start.

None of them work.

It then loops to the windows xp screen

Then to an ad for the mainboard

then to a scan devices screen

then to some sort of listing

This morning there was a listing that on each line named had a number of the programs I run at the end of each line. It has not come up this time.

The hard disk comes on for the main board screen and the listing screen

You haven’t said anything about the age of the PC that has difficulty...I assume you have at least two...
Also just for clarification how to you connect...thru dialup?

I think I bought it in 2005. As a matter of fact there are some threads out there about my purchase. I connect with a cable. The other computers are a bit older 2004 they stand alone.

No I won’t get mad,...just trying to improve the precision on the info....there is a whole range of things that can be done to get you beyond just this problem ...but get you better prepared for the next one...which will come at the worst possible moment....so to speak.

I would suggest you isolate any personal data that you can away from a machine that gets on the internet....that would be a smart thing to do...may not be that easy to do...however,....

I need to deal with this. YOu are not going to believe this, but I honestly thought I backed up just a little while ago. I was shocked when I pulled out the packet this afternoon to see that it was two years. I have wanted to pull a whole reconfiguation of our computers to make them work better and communicate. with appropriate safeguards. I jsut need to focus.

Why? I thought my firewall would protect me. So no one can see me. I do everything on this computer.

My recovery cd boots up to a command prompt. That is command mode, as you will find out if you read your windows documentation.

Anything is possible. That's why it is a good idea to have a "CLEAN" bootable CD with various system and security tools that you can use to boot the system, and scan for virus' and do other system functions without running the risk of using tainted tools.

Sorry, I've probably just complicated your computing experience even more, but the one's who told you that using computers was easy and without risk, were lying.

Using a computer is no different than power tools, firearms, playing around with electricity, gas, heavy machinery, or any other complex and/or dangerous system.

Know the rules, learn the pitfalls and safety procedures; protect yourself.

Here is a link to a Linksys Router at Newegg:

LINKSYS BEFSR41 10/100Mbps EtherFast Cable/DSL Router
with 4-Port Switch 1 x 10/100Mbps WAN Ports 4 x 10/100Mbps LAN Ports - Retail $49.99

Now this is a hardware Firewall....as opposed to a software firewall...like ZONEALARM ....

That router ,... will allow 4 machines to get access to the internet....assuming the computers are equipped with ethernet connecters on the Motherboard and ethernet cards in the PCI slots....

You may need assistance from the cable provider to set up a router

My recovery cd boots up to a command prompt.

As I said "usually" and "most". Yours is not usual, or common. In fact, I don't ever recall seeing one that did. Again, as I said, you were confused, command prompt, not command mode. There is no such thing as command mode in a PC. Please, photocopy your windows documentation and post it.

So, first you dis me by saying what I posted "is not true". Then, you insult me by ragging on me in a post to someone else, without the courtesy of a ping, then you tell me to read your windows documentation, and finally, you throw off "my recovery cd boots up to a command prompt".

As if.

I know you won't copy your docs, so, thanks for playing.
