Greetings Freepers! This is my first post and I want to say at the outset that this post is not a cheap shot at either President Bush or the GOP. I am just looking for opinions more than anything.
My question is, how much of a negative effect do you think the Bush administration has had on the current standing of the GOP in the minds of voters, and the resulting electability of GOP candidates? Is the current negative perception the fault of the administration, or does it have more to do with the mantra that the media has consistently spewed towards all things Bush related, or is it due in your opinion to a perceived do-nothing congress when the GOP had control?
Based on how you answer these questions, my second question is do you think it was even Bush at all that started the slide, or had the slide already started before Bush was elected in 2000? If so, do you think it started with Daddy Bush, or even earlier with Reagan?

Vanity first posts are highly discouraged, BTW. Especially poorly framed ones.
Bush and the GOP-controlled Congress share responsibility for the decline of approval of the GOP. I think if they would have kept spending in check, they would still have control of both houses. But they spent like Democrats because they were too big of wussies to make any tough cuts.

It started with Daddy Bush and looking at the nominee this year it’s just getting worse and worse. I fully expect in 2012 to be looking at the new GOP nominee, Senator Joe Liebermann.
30% the fault of the Admin and 70% the media. Do Americans even know that under Bush we had close to 8% GDP growth? Most Americans don't even realize that the entire federal income tax rate was reduced. All they hear is the "Bush gave ONLY the rich tax cuts."
I believe the answer to your question is that Canadians
prefer `doggy style’ so they can watch hockey on TV.
But that’s just my opinion, mind you.

As far as your question, I thank God every day that He allowed George W. Bush as the POTUS—in the right place at the right time for our country to survive the horror of 9/11 and the aftermath of it...I love it when the MSM tries to make it sound like a bad thing that a John McCain presidency will be like W’s ‘third term’—let’s see, no more terrorist attacks on American soil, the economy is basically fine, and we are winning the WOT around the world—of course, all of these can be fine tuned due to various problems, because no one is perfect. But no, there’s not been any ‘slide’ as far as far as that goes, except when Billary ruled the country for 8 years! And that goes back to the racist/bigoted Jimmah Carter’s years in office.
The total asininity of John McCain far outweighs any “Bush effect” in pissing off GOP voters.
I don’t blame the media. They spewed at Reagan and it never stuck.
Two things:
1. Bush was not what we thought he was. He was not a conservative and he has what I call the ‘Prince Syndrome’. He doesn’t want to get down in the trenches and fight back against his detractors, as they are beneath him. In fact by ignoring these problems until they reached some critical mass, he emboldened his critics.
2. We’ve had 80+ years of various levels of socialism and it turns out Americans like it. The Republican Party has finally accepted this and in the classic, “if you can’t fight them, join them” have joined the big government, throw money at everything, Washington party.
Bush isn’t running this year.
The GoP has chosen a path that may well spell its rapid demise will only ensure it gains even more speed as it kicks its base to the curb.
Those who choose to live in the middle will likely endure only scorn and distrust from both sides. It is no way to govern much less be anything more than a hollow vessel adrift and destined ot fade away in due time.
