Way, way late getting to this great Labor Day thread - lots of beautiful graphics & sweet posts - and lots of HOLIDAYS today, Amy! Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. We had unexpected company yesterday afternoon and have been with them all day.

I've read all of "this month's" posts - so pretty! Will be back in the morning, but since it's almost midnight here, am going to go ahead and post tomorrow's opening & holidays tonight.

  • Ramadan begins today, and lasts through September 30.

  • Vietnam celebrates Independence Day

  • Today WE celebrate Victory Day - Japan's WWII surrender to Allied forces in 1945

V-J Day (with V-J denoting "Victory over Japan" or "Victory in Japan") is the day that the Empire of Japan surrendered to the Allied forces, effectively ending World War II. The informal surrender occurred on August 14, 1945, followed by the formal surrender on September 2, 1945. V-J Day can be considered any one of three days: August 14 or 15, or September 2, but most observances occur on August 14. Sadly, V-J Day doesn't appear on most calendars today and it is either ignored or given light coverage by news media.

Today is also designated "PLAY DAY", and what better
way to play than to play like a kid again!
This poem was written by Nicknamed_Bob for

Amy's Place on July 8, 2005.

(The 'kid' below just reminds me of NnB.)   :)

Being A Kid

Being a kid means never having to say you’re sorry, and mean it!
It means someone will come along and fix it, you can play.
It means that tiny things can mean a lot to you, a marble, or a peanut,
And you will get to eat, before your stomach says, “Okay!”

And someone will remind you that you need to sleep.

It means you know someone who always has the money,
To operate the candy vending thing, and will.
But makes you do those silly things like ask,
And won’t cooperate with voices that are shrill.

Someone who thinks a promise is to keep.

It means that all you ever have to do is play,
‘Cause that’s the way you learn things, don’t you know?
And they will praise you for the funny things you say,
Unless you got them staying up to watch a show!

And they’ll carry you uphill when it is steep.

Sometimes I want to be a kid again;
to go back to the time when:

Catching the fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening.

Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, “do over!”

“Race issue” meant arguing about who ran the fastest.

Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in “Monopoly”.

It wasn’t odd to have two or three “best” friends.

Being old referred to anyone over 20.

You could determine if someone loved you by plucking flower petals.

The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties.

Decisions were made by going “eeny-meeny-miney-mo.”

It was magic when dad would “remove” his thumb.

It was unbelievable that dodge ball wasn’t an Olympic event.

Nobody was prettier than Mom.

Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.

It was a big deal to finally be tall enough to ride the “big people” rides at the amusement park.

Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.

Abilities were discovered because of a “double-dog-dare.”

Unreserved lifetime commitments and promises were made with “cross-my-heart-and-hope-to-die.”

Saturday morning cartoons weren’t 30-minute ads for action figures.

“Olie-olie-oxen-free” made perfect sense.

Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.

War was a card game.

Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.

A playing card in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle.

Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin.

A lie didn’t count if your fingers were crossed.

Ice cream was considered a basic food group.

Pass It On
Lest you forget the things your eyes have seen . . . teach them to your children and your grandchildren. —Deuteronomy 4:9
One day as my wife was baby-sitting our granddaughter, she shared an old, familiar friend with her. With Eliana in her arms, Sue picked up a well-worn book that we had read to our daughter when she was a little girl. It’s a book called The Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes, a staple in our efforts to share God’s truth with our children.

So now it is Eliana’s turn to begin to learn about God’s creation, His goodness, His plan, and His salvation. It’s time for her to be told about what we have seen and experienced in our walk of faith. As Deuteronomy 4:9 says, “Teach [God’s statutes] to your children and your grandchildren.”

Back in the days of Deuteronomy, the people were being handed a gift from God—“the statutes and the judgments” (v.1) that would allow them to live properly in the land of God’s promise. Along with those laws came an admonition for the people to share with their progeny the lessons God taught them on the way. They were told not to “forget the things your eyes have seen” (v.9) and to teach God’s words to their children and grandchildren.

We have a similar legacy to convey to the next generation. As followers of Christ, we take this as one of our greatest responsibilities. Pass it on.

Begin to train them early
To fear and love the Lord,
To carry on life’s pathway
God’s lamp, His holy Word. —Fennema

If children are to find their way to God, we must point the way.

Lisa Braun, "September"
The Spirit of the Northern Lakes
Saskatchewan calendars

Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh, so mellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Try to remember when life was so tender
That no one wept except the willow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
That dreams were kept beside your pillow.
Try to remember when life was so tender
That love was an ember about to billow.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
Then follow.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Good morning, Rus. Thank you for today’s Bible Lesson - seems so often the daily devotional follows our ‘theme’ for the day - coincidence? Today it’s about children. :)

Good morning, OESY - as always, you find such great things to post to further expound upon the day’s theme and/or daily ‘celebrations’.
