All year, Sen. Obama has worked hard to win evangelical voters. They’ve run campaign ads, distributed literature about being a “committed Christian,” and offered numerous outreach events at the Democratic convention. At stake are about six million voters - moderate evangelicals who voted for George W. Bush last time but were intrigued by Sen. Obama.
Several things have battered Sen. Obama’s standing with moderate evangelicals:
1) His poor performance at the Saddleback candidates forum, especially (or perhaps entirely) his comment about it being “above my pay grade” to know when life begins.
2) The selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, an appealing antiabortion figure and the perceived attacks on her by the media, which led evangelicals to think the “elites” were against them. This sentiment has been skillfully stoked by the Republicans.
3) The Democrats’ decision to run radio ads championing Sen. Obama’s abortion-rights position without discussing his abortion-reduction agenda. “Unless the Obama campaign will stop emphasizing abortion rights and strongly address the major common cause issues with a spirited vision and practical details, the Republicans can continue to scoop up a ton of votes,” says Hunter.
4) The Obama campaign’s failure to combat effectively the charge that he opposed giving protection to infants who survive abortions. It’s now become a standard part of the Republican litany that Sen. Obama supports not only abortion but also infanticide.
5) Quiet concern among evangelical leaders of faith-based groups that Sen. Obama’s faith-based initiative would leave most faith-based groups in the cold because he wouldn’t allow them to hire only from their particular faith....................

The glow is coming off the halo. Zerobama is a false messiah.
“The Obama campaigns failure to combat effectively the charge that he opposed giving protection to infants who survive abortions. Its now become a standard part of the Republican litany that Sen. Obama supports not only abortion but also infanticide.”
This is a “charge”?? I thought Obama’s vote on this was legislative fact. Are there not videos of sessions where he argued this position for post-birth abortion? This is not a charge. It is fact?
Remember the rule. Telling the truth about a liberal politician is called “swift-boating”. It is a Very Bad Thing.
Frankly, I am wondering what took so long for these evangelicals. (I am not one, but we are in sync on lots of issues.) Obama’s ONE vote on the legislation to protect those born alive through a “failed” abortion should have told them everything RIGHT THEN AND THERE.
But at least this purported awakening occurs before November. (I am not convinced many evangelicals took him that seriously from the start, though I could be reading things incorrectly.)
It's fact. A Google search for Illinois legislature should bring up relevant data. I've downloaded all the websites myself for direct reference.
Well, at least obamamessiah still has the support of the atheists who are reeeeally bummed out that they still don’t out-number the Christians (”troglodytes”). :)

This is how we will lose - PZ Myers

Palin scares me, but what worries me more is that we will screw up again and hand the executive office over to another gang of losers, and we cant afford that anymore. Now look at the open thread http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/09/palin_open_thread.php I set up last night, and youll see why Im concerned. What did people do? They got distracted by irrelevancies, such as the opportunity to exercise a little macho sexism, and then that turned into a nasty, full-blown knife fight with everyone snarling at each other. This is exactly what the Republicans want, writ small on this little tiny island of the blogosphere.
Thats not how were going to beat back the troglodytes.
Palin is a stalking horse for failed social and economic and military policies. We dont want to get drawn away from the important message of defeating those bad policies by the temptation of cheap shots at her appearance and sex, especially because those cheap shots make her look like a sympathetic victim and help advance the Republican agenda.
So please, think. Casual sexism plays into the hands of the bad guys on both sides. What frightens me most is that Palin got up and lied and said nothing of substance, and people are so distracted by the fact that she has breasts that the lies were allowed to slide by. This is how the Democrats can self-destruct, once again.

You finally got one right, PZ. This IS how you will lose.
Even totally united behind Gore in 2000 and Kerry in 2004 you couldnt beat a dumbass draft dodging reborn alcoholic George Shrub Bush and his snake-oil sidekick Dick Cheney of all people. Thats pretty pathetic. This round youve got an even worse candidate that half of your own party thinks stole the nomination by cheating and dirty politics. Your party is shattered up the middle and you have the worst candidate in all the decades Ive been paying attention. I knew Jack Kennedy and your nominee, PZ, is no Jack Kennedy.
Now the culture war is still on, the players are all the same on both sides, except this time we have an honest-to-God centrist war hero, even if he is an elitist beltway insider, and a little unheard of cutie, obviously a political savant, who in 30 minutes won the hearts and minds of every heretofore apathetic God fearing blue collar flyover family all across the nation and made them start caring about who wins this election not to mention is stealing a lot of the Hillary voters who wanted nothing more than a woman in the Whitehouse. If McCain wins then Palin, sooner or later, is going to become the first woman president of the United States as by the time shes up for election to the top spot there wont be any question of lack of experience. You are basically looking at teh American Margaret Thatcher. Get used to her. Shes going to be in your face for the next 16 years. Its all over except for the tears and anger from your side that you were f*cked yet again. Write that down.
Obama’s just a late nite infomercial that slowly fades away.
They must be clinging to their religion.
Not sure if any amount of gas thrown on that fire would make it any more obvious.
BTW, what Evangelical would consider voting for that Marxist Death Cult member anyway?
I think that Sarah Palin having been put on the ticket as the VP, and her and Todd choosing life for their down syndrome baby will highlight the desire to PROTECT LIFE. This is a major plank for the Republican party and I for one am so happy to see both members on the Reb ticket strong pro-lifers and have lots of kids between them. A dozen kids between them and support for military strong as 3 of the 12 are ACTIVE MILITARY! GO MCCAIN/PALIN!
It’s about time those lukewarm Christians heated up!
I don’t care who ya are. If you say you are an evangelical and you vote for a baby killer, you ain’t no evangelical.
Love the Dave Scott” quote!
Unlike many here on FR I am not in favor of a total overturning of Roe vs Wade. However it is not a "charge" that Obama supports infanticide of botched late term abortions it is a matter of record.
A problem is that if you tell most people what Obama's position was while in the Illinois state senate you would not be believed simply because the position he took is so reprehensibly cruel. Most people could never fathom (and therefore not believe) that any politician could block and vote against such decent and common sense legislation.
What would a “moderate” Evangelical be?
“Since you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I am going to spit you out of my mouth.” Revelation 3:16
I dont care who ya are. If you say you are an evangelical and you vote for a baby killer, you aint no evangelical.”
