Humans have observed other animals for hundreds of thousands of years. Yet research with some of our familiar fellow creatures continues to reveal unsuspected talents. ..A German-Czech team has shown that cattle and deer have an unsuspected magnetic sense that lets them line up with the north-south direction of Earth's magnetic field....magpies have a sense of self-recognition when looking in a mirror.

"My dog can look up."Is that considered unusual or are you just noticing that your dog can do that?

No research needed, just observation over a period of time. My lovely back yard flock of chickens, pea cocks and hens, a turkey and a clutch of Bantams are the most remarkable creatures, most with distinct personalities as well as their places in the pecking order.

Why didn't you just tell your buddy Shaun that he was wrong? My Lab spends hours on end just looking up in the trees waiting for the squirrels to make one misstep. ;-) She also watches the jets heading into the airport.
Heck, both the lab and the mini-dachshund (especially the mini-d) will sit patiently at my feet looking up at me as I stand at the kitchen counter making a nice fat sandwich on a Saturday afternoon.
Just asking which direction you were coming from... so there? ;-)

My dog can always find something in the backyard that stinks so he can roll in it.

This is very true.
How much of my tax money is going into this study which we have already known about animals for years?
Can we bill the Government?

"My dog can always find something in the backyard that stinks so he can roll in it."
My dog used to do that but I've trained him to be more useful around the house.
