Message in a bottle found 35 years after being thrown overboard

Evan Buffington knew what he had found as soon as he spotted it in the sand.

The bottle was imbedded in a small island no more than 48 square miles called Middle Caicos, part of the British West Indies. Buffington found it while vacationing with his family in late August, on a hike with the men of the family. Buffington, a resident of Makanda, Ill., dug out the bottle and brushed off the sand.

It was a clear glass Tab cola bottle, with a cork inside and an aluminum screw top to keep it sealed. Some moisture had seeped in, but its contents appeared to be preserved.

Inside was a note.

Buffington, 26, waited until his return to the United States to retrieve the note - allowing time for the excess moisture to dry. Upon opening the bottle, a note scribbled on a piece of stationery from a Norwegian America cruise ship, parched and aged from the sun, fell out.

"I am on the Vistafjord. Write back to Andrew Tallos," the message said in a child's handwriting. "324 Haviland Rd, Stamford, Conn. 06903."

The note on stationery from a Norwegian America cruise ship dated Dec. 29, 1973, was found in a clear glass Tab bottle.

Andrew Tallos of Stamford, now in his 40s, placed a message in a bottle in 1973 that was recently discovered in Turks & Caicos. 'I really had forgotten all about the bottle, the vacation, so it's interesting to hear that it's turned up and survived,' he said.

Lol. I tried the letter tied to a balloon method when I was younger. I never got a reply back.

It is the last happy memory they had as a family, Seabrook said.

"I don't think he ever recovered," Seabrook said. "He was always shy, but never nervous like he is now. It's been very hard on him - he works and keeps to himself at home with few friends and no dates.

"It rocks your confidence to the core to lose both of your parents so young. We never had anyone to ask questions to - what's right or wrong."

THANKS A LOT SIS! ANY OHTER EMBARRASSING THINGS YOU WANT TO TELL THE WORLD!

I wish the man well. Perhaps he will venture out more. No doubt it was difficult to lose your parents at a young age. This found bottle may be a turning point to a brighter future.

To lose both parents at an early age used to be unfortunately common. Andrew Jackson’s father died before his son was born, and Andrew Jackson’s mother died when he was 14. Herbert Hoover lost his father when he was 6 and his mother when he was 9.

My wife is a school teacher and in her 4th grade class a little 9 year old boys parents went on holiday up to San Francisco last week and were in an accident. The father died and the mother had 4 breaks in her back but will live. The boy just found out yesterday, much to my wifes relief, she had known for a week and it was tearing her up to see this happy little boy come to school every morning. It has really put this last couple of weeks into perspective for me. My 8 year old son is starting to complain about me hugging him to much though.

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE FOUND - TWICE!

First in Scotland then in Norway.

On the 18th September 2006, my mother found a message in a bottle on a beach near Durness village in the far north of Scotland. The message was written by Finnley (age 7) from Australia while he was on holiday with his family in Durness. The message had only been in the sea for 1 week. I took it to Durness Primary School. Mr Bruce's class were excited about the message. Every pupil then wrote a short message and drew a picture on my handmade paper. I also wrote a message. Everything, including Finnley's original message was put back in the bottle and thrown into the sea again.

I made contact with Finnley in Australia to tell him what we had done. His family were delighted at the news."
