It Can't Happen Here
It Can't Happen Here | 1935 | Sinclair Lewis

Posted on 10/12/2008 3:47:14 PM PDT by Vendek

"A real Fascist dictatorship?"

"Nonsense! Nonsense!" snorted Tasbrough. "That couldn't happen here in America, not possibly! We're a country of freemen."

"The answer to that," suggested Doremus Jessup, "if Mr. Falck will forgive me, is 'the hell it can't!' Why, there's no country in the world that can get more hysterical--yes, or more obsequious!--than America. Look how Huey Long became absolute monarch over Louisiana. Listen to Father Coughlin on the radio--divine oracles, to millions. Remember how casually most Americans have accepted Tammany grafting and Chicago gangs and the crookedness of so many of President Harding's appointees?

"Remember our war hysteria, when we called sauerkraut 'Liberty cabbage' and somebody actually proposed calling German measles 'Liberty measles'? And wartime censorship of honest papers? Bad as Russia! Remember our kissing the--well, the feet of Billy Sunday, the million-dollar evangelist, and of Aimée McPherson, who swam from the Pacific Ocean clear into the Arizona desert and got away with it? Remember Voliva and Mother Eddy? . . .

"Remember our Red scares and our Catholic scares, when all well-informed people knew that the O.G.P.U. were hiding out in Oskaloosa, and the Republicans campaigning against Al Smith told the Carolina mountaineers that if Al won the Pope would illegitimatize their children? Remember Tom Heflin and Tom Dixon?

"Remember the Kentucky night-riders? Remember how trainloads of people have gone to enjoy lynchings? Not happen here? Prohibition--shooting down people just because they might be transporting liquor--no, that couldn't happen in America! Why, where in all history has there ever been a people so ripe for a dictatorship as ours! We're ready to start on a Children's Crusade--only of adults--right now, and the Right Reverend Abbots Windrip and Prang are all ready to lead it!"

Sinclair Lewis was, of course, thinking of fascism when he wrote his novel, It Can't Happen Here, in the mid-1930s. But worth thinking about witnessing the mass adulation/hysteria around Obama.

Listen up!

This is not about fighting FOR McCain -- I know this goes against everything you are used to -- this is about fighting FOR the America that you know and love.

Forget McCain, forget McCain, forget McCain.

We have to fight FOR the country and life we love and in doing so deliver a demoralizing defeat to the hard-left that is the Obama campaign. Obama brings with him a few thousand people if he wins -- and all of them despise your ideals! Their values, in most cases, are diametrically opposed to yours.

How do we fight when our nominee says “stand up and fight with me” one minute and “calm down and be nice to Mr. Obama” the next minute?

If the guy out in front falters then we pick him up and continue the charge!

There are literally millions of people working to demoralize little-'ol'you right now--millions!

Please let this sink in, let it simmer to a boil and join us in this fight FOR America!

No one is coming -- except you and I!

Imagine how afraid and alone our ancestors felt in facing the mightiest military on the planet -- the British! Just imagine how many of them were oh, so tempted to lie down in a fetal position to avoid the King's murderous rampage -- they were some of the bravest people to have EVER existed.

Now, it is our turn.

Ah, but they aren't marching over the hill to line up and fire on you, no, no, no. The new war happens with visual and auditory messages, propaganda -- we have to use our minds more nowadays.

In this war you are surrounded by the voices, images and message of the enemy. They materialize in front of you with angelic smiles and feigned character. How can they be so bad? They seem nice enough.

One thing has not changed over the centuries: It's far wiser to judge a man by his deeds and the company he keeps than by the promises he makes.

You are righteous. A mere glance back through history will reveal the great men and women that shared your ideals. These great American men and women are the company you keep!

Don't let the bastards take the confidence that was earned long ago and is your rightful inheritance as a proud American. The confidence arrived at through the knowledge that you will not lean upon your fellow man and you will not be leaned upon by force -- at the end of a gun!

Socialism and freedom CANNOT COEXIST!

Yes, it's that important, that fundamental to our future.

You may not see red coats but their intellectual heirs are moving en masse against your very freedom!

They don't deserve our great country and we don't deserve their rule!

Fight, Americans, fight them!

They will not call it socialism and neither fascism, nazism or communism. They pick a new name and new clothes for the Emperor. The “change” will remain - an omnipowerful Government with hugely expanded number of people directly dependent on it for living. Censorship will not be called censorship either. It will be known as “fairness”. Or “pursuit of happiness”, if they decide to go completely insulting. Etc. and so forth.

Orwell's 1984! With a liitle or a lot of Brave New World thrown in.

The lost of trust in our institutions and each other is behind the gathering storm. We have not even begun to see the worst of "it" yet.

Murder and Mayhem coming soon to a neighbornood near you!

That’s right.

This is why the left has been so successful. Their message is soft and fluffy — socialism by stealth — the end result, however, is a river of blood.

This goes to a bigger point that in any argument between a rational man and an irrational man — the rational man will lose every time.

The irrational man doesn’t have to define the terms — and can redefine them at will. He doesn’t have the immense burden of adhering to reality or to ethics. Anything goes!

The rational man loses merely by entering the argument — this is universal!

So, I say, don’t argue with them — DESTROY THEM!

Sinclair Lewis was one ot the Muck Raker Journalists. He was also a leftist. It can’t happen here was about how “right wingers” could elect a president that would not be bound by the constitution, but by declaring an emergency could make up his own constitution as he went along, much as Lincoln did and later FDR. It makes for an interesting read and SL is easy to read. Although a socialist, BHO would rule by Chrisma, and then by terror after he returns to his Muslim roots.

Assuming that public that judges the argument is also irrational... Oh well, whom we are kidding - you are right, of course. Agree with the rest, too. I wish it was not so.

It is already happening. Read the “Uniform Child Abduction Prevention Act” that is being pushed by the American Bar association. It has already passed unmodified in 7 or 8 states.

YOU can be accused of plotting to kidnap your own child -

simply for picking up the child’s birth certificate;
the child’s medical records;
the child’s school records;

selling your house; terminating your lease; quiting your job; any other undefined ‘unusual’ transactions;

for planning a trip to another state;

for having relative who live in another state; for not having enough relatives who live in your current state;

for having emotional ties to another state; for not having strong enough emotional ties to your current state;

for having cultural ties to another state; for not having strong cultural ties to your state.

IN SHORT - ANY REASON WILL DO.

In return, the cops can bust in your door at any hour of the day or night and take your kids. Just like they took Eliane Gonzales.

So the fascism is rapidly approaching.

“Agree with the rest, too. I wish it was not so.”

Now, wait a minute.

I wasn’t saying this to dishearten you — this is the universe — it is what it is.

Use it towards your survival and you will be a happy person. To the extent that you ignore it, or defy it, will you suffer.

Unfortunately, and more proof that we are individuals first and a “society” second, the individual that “goes along” with, or even gets caught-up in the left and their defying of universal law (forcing the individual to act against his survival instinct and live for the sake of anything else but himself) suffers equally.

The universe will not tolerate, in fact, cannot tolerate defiance.

A human must live for his own sake. Every time something else has been attempted, or forced upon him, there was stagnation and death.

Compare that to America that was clearly built upon the premise (natural law) that a man must live for his own sake. Look at the results — the highest standard of living ever known.

We must survive, no, thrive as individuals to prosper as a group — there is no other way for us in the universe. As soon as you make a law that “benefits” the group but not an individual you have started the process of decay — the rest in only a matter of time.

Our tool of survival is our mind — not the tribe we belong to — every creative thought, every solution to every problem we have faced as humans was born out of one person’s mind — just one! Everything starts in one humans mind and is passed-on to others — evolution! That is the glorious thing about books. Nothing like a good book to keep a man free, I always say.

You don’t have claws, fangs or a tough hide — your only means of survival is your mind and your ability, as an individual to make decisions in your benefit.

The left seeks to undermine your sole tool of survival in their quest for “equality” and “fairness” — these do not and cannot exist. And if you love life you don’t want them to exist — everything you know would cease to exist. We cannot survive equally. To chase “fairness” is to chase the “real” Mickey Mouse — your something close to insane at this point, stoned without the dope.

To make you equal that have to make you equally unable to survive. Your mind, your survival instinct is a direct threat to their grip on power.

The thinking human is slippery in the hands of tyrants. Why do you suppose it so very important to tyrants, dictators and opressive governments to BURN BOOKS (how we share our individual creations) and SUPRESS FREE SPEECH (another way we share)?

The more you use your brain the less likely you will be ruled — they know this.

In short, they seek to kill you “for your own good”.
