“The constitution overrides even the most fevered dreams of any president.”

You need to read this book:

Makes me think something bad is coming no matter who is elected.

Read the article ... your faith may be misplaced.

The article quotes one our "heroes" over there gibbering the usual Brady-Feinstein-0bama anti-gun nonsense about disarming folks making the place "safer". The rhetoric in there, both from US and Iraqi personnel is 100% Democrat Party gun-ban stuff.

The city government has really screwed up on this one. I'm afraid it's true and the Iraqis are furious. I am vehemently opposed to this as are most Americans here. And the troops DO NOT like being involved in this. The only people they enjoy confiscating weapons from are terrorists.

Two of my Iraqi co-workers were just talking to me about this today. They are frustrated and angry...VERY angry at the government. I told them:

"There is one thing you can do. Fire the government."

They both looked at me incredulously and then Haider said, "We can't fire the government! I wish we could."

I said, "You can try. You have an election in January. Fire them at the ballot box. Make this an issue. Ban together with your neighbors, with everybody you know who is against this and petition your government. If they refuse to listen, fire them. Get involved in a campaign."

They both brightened at this, so I kept pushing them. "You're free. You have a voice. Make them let you remain FREE."

Neither of these two guys' neighborhoods have been swept in this yet. But they're reluctantly willing to cooperate. I told them that was OK, but to fight it legally.

Stay tuned.

“That hasn’t stopped NFA ‘34, GCA ‘68, Brady Act ‘93, and AWB ‘94. What makes you think the Constitution will halt another major firearms ban and/or confiscation?”

I don’t usually read too much of Joseph Sobran, but old Joe had a great quote: “The US Constitution no longer represents a serious threat to our form of government.”

Why are they doing this? I think the same thing will happen there as it will happen here. Only the law abiding will give their guns up, leaving the terrorists/criminals the only ones who have guns. Once our troops are gone, it’s going to be like it was when Saddam was in power. Those poor people won’t be able to defend themselves!

If I remember correctly, this was done when we first went in, but it was privately-owned machineguns and rocket launchers that were being “taken off the streets”.

Yes, the oppressed Iraqi people could own an M60 or FAL or rocket launcher at home, unlike the free people here. Remember the pictures of people firing full-auto into the air?

Now I guess this is phase 2.

“The article quotes one our “heroes” over there gibbering the usual Brady-Feinstein-0bama anti-gun nonsense about disarming folks making the place “safer”. The rhetoric in there,...”

Talk about the rhetoric...compare these two statements:

“No one will be able to be armed,” said Deputy Chief Warren Riley. “We are going to take all the weapons. Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons.” —New Orleans, 2005 (after Hurricane Katrina).

...and...

“Sgt. Allah Atemadh thought the city would be safer without so many guns around. “Baghdad, it must be disarmed,” Atemadh said. “They will confiscate the guns from everybody — especially private guns.” —Baghdad, Iraq, 2008

How are the citizens of Baghdad supposed to defend themselves? This is a bad idea. A lot of households won't give up their weapons and our soldiers are going to be in firefights with the good guys.

Who in the hell came up with this plan?

I wasn’t sure about direct quotes from that source ... but yeah. That’s what I was talking about. You quoted an Iraqi Sgt, but they also had a US officer in there spewing the same stuff.

Check out Allegra’s reply #24 above...she is in Baghdad and has some background on this situation.

I mean-I know it’s Baghdad, but still...

An honest citizen is as likely to need to defend himself in Baghdad as in Dallas.

This is NOT a Good Thing. Especially not having American troops doing it.

Even leaving aside the implications for us here in the US, it's bound to alienate the Baghdadies. I know it would irritate the hell out of me. Are we trying to grow the insurgency again?

The constitution overrides even the most fevered dreams of any president.

Only if it's obeyed and enforced. That's not going to happen in either a McCain or an Obama adminstration. Obama will ignore the second amendment, as McCain has ignored the first. (IIRC, while he's better than The One, he's still not all that great on the second either.)

As this article states, machine guns (AK-47s) were allowed, but only one per household.

So this is the CITY government that is foisting this on it's citizens~! That's just how it's shaping up here stateside. You handled it well with your Iraqi Friends Allegra.

You should teach them what "Molon Labe" means, and let them know our prayers and wishes are with them...

Yes, it's only Baghdad at this point. What is it with capitals? Our own capital does similar crap.

I hope they get get this repealed because the law-abiding citizens should have every right to protect their families and their property. They do background checks on people for a variety of reasons; if they feel the need, they can do checks on people and allow them to have firearms.

If al Qaeda and JAM know about this (and I'm sure they do) what kind of message does it send? What sort of encouragement does it give those thugs?

If they can't get this turned around, I fear it may spread to other parts of the country.

We're still teaching them how to use their democracy. It's still a relatively new concept to them. I'd love to see them win this.
