Woman Caught Stealing Duck From Sacramento Park
CBS5 ^ | Oct 24, 2008

A woman was caught allegedly trying to steal a duck from a local pond, and the reason she gave police was very unusual.

Ducks seem to be disappearing at the Land Park Pond in Sacramento. Police aren't exactly sure why, but in one case, they tracked down the alleged thief and she gave them an unusual excuse.

"It's certainly not the type of call an officer gets everyday," said Sgt. Matt Young, Sacramento Police Department.

Police said someone saw a woman and her children playing at the pond. Soon after, the witness said, the woman took off with the duck.

"Our officers investigated, opened the [woman's] trunk and found the duck inside," said Sgt. Matt Young.

The woman apparently told officers the duck followed her family and they wanted to take it home to keep as a pet.

Park-goers enjoying the beautiful fall day were surprised and disappointed to hear the news.

"The ducks are here for everyone, if you start taking them, everyone will," said one park-goer.

The accused thief, Angela Chan, was cited and has to pay a fine. The city will also consider making it a misdemeanor to take an animal from a park.

Police said the duck is now back at the pond, doing just fine.

I can't believe this is a real article. Some the sentences are hilarious.

if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be worth stealing as a pet for your kids.

And this is why socialism (and Obama's plan) does not work.

We have had people take them from local park and golf club ponds to eat them.

Really? For some reason I don't see that happening, but I've never been tempted to steal wildlife either.

If someone can get a wild duck in a park to willingly come go with them and get in your trunk, maybe they should be able to keep the duck.

This is a very Chinese area of Sacramento, with a large number of unassimilated immigrants. Half the business signs are in Chinese.
I think Ms. Chan was planning on some Peking duck.

I like feeding ducks and watching them, but I have no desire to take them anywhere.
