Just want to know if the cheaper brands of ammo are OK. Been hearing some mixed things about American ammo. Any feedback is helpful. 45 cal and 12 gauge and 7.62 are a few rounds I enjoy,, but I have some experience with others. I know more about handguns than I do rifles. Never hunted but am thinking about it for next year. Always wanted a good lever action hunting rifle. Any suggestions there as well?
Oh, this’ll get a few responses.
Wiley Coyote always buys Acme brand.
Try to “roll your own” - reload your own ammunition. Then you can’t blame anyone when you get a misfire.
Federal, Remington....Winchester
The best is ALWAYS what you re-load on your own...provided you learn how, and pay attention to what you’re doing :)
On the lever action, for medium sized game, a Winchester 30/30 pre 1964.
The vast majority lever action rifles you’ll find are chambered for 30-30, .44 Mag or .22 LR/Mag. There are other calibers, of course, but mostly pistol and revolver.
Marlin 336 30/30 lever action
Federal, Remington, any good American brand
Is this really cheaper overall,, and does it require some kind of license??
The lacquered centerfire stuff from WOLF has a reputation for fouling autoloaders, but beyond that most major manufacturers make decent ammunition. There are “promotional” lines made by many companies, like Federal’s “American Eagle” and what’s usually called “Winchester White Box” that are inexpensive and many purchase it for practice. I would be carefull purchasing foriegn made military surplus stuff, but any of the major sellers are ok in my experience.
Remington Express High Brass.
Federal/CCI, Winchester, Sellier & Bellot.
+1 on the Marlin 336.
For hunting ammo, Federal gets my vote. Federal premium ammo, often with Nosler Partition bullets, works well in hunting big came.
Federal is also good in shotgun ammo
Fiocchi used to be a cheap(er) import brand I liked in 9mm FMJ practice ammo. They also make good shotgun ammo.
PMC makes good ball/practice ammo as well.
Black Hills makes excellent ammo in military calibers (5.56 and 7.62).
Sellier & Bellot .45&9mm. PMC .45, CCI lawman .45
Depends on what you are looking for. Black HIlls, Winchester, Federal is good. etc. Main thing is to get plenty now while you can
Cannot beat a Marlin.
