Hello Fellow Freepers!
I am young and a bit naive when it comes to firearms but am interested in a good home defense shotgun. As I am well aware many of you have experience in this area I was wondering what recomendations you might have to Remington 870 express vs the Mossberg 500?
I am a Remington believer. Ran a Trap area at a camp one summer, and the 870 was solid. Receiver is milled I believe, but much stronger than other brands I have seen. My brother got a good 870 recently, with the larger mag extension to the end of the barrel. Nice gun! It will last forever.

Tweedy is not going to be robbing you, so aiming is not required with any shotgun at close range. Just point it at the intruder and squeeze off.
That is only important if they want to kill you personally. To the average thug on the street that sound says "Why don't you go bother the Liberal hopplophobe down the street?"
Just my preference. I'd advise you check out both and see which is a better fit for you.

For the purpose, I’ll take a Saiga 12 any ol’ day.

But 10 rd. mags do heck on bowling pins (or whatever)
It's actually 8 and 9 shots with one in the chamber. My point was for self defense purposes, there really is no distinction between the two. I have an old double barrel that I can fire twice without reloading loaded with 00. That delivers 18 .32 caliber slugs in less time than I can blink.

That’s the other dilemma. My wife is not a big fan of guns and has a fear of them. I understand fear in terms of safety is good but I also want her to feel comfortable firing them and practicing. I was thinking that for her I might get a 9mm pistol or possibly a 9mm carbine. Something with little kick that she can practice and feel comfortable with.

I went with the Mossberg. Cheaper, came with a ghost sight, tang mounted safety, and the pump release is at the back, not front of the trigger guard.
Really, I was kidding. I own a couple of guns, all inherited. I love shooting, but generally not a hunter. Not that I have anything against those that are.
My grandfather was a plant manager for the Springfield Armory in WWII. Guns have always been a part of my life.
I think its important for people to understand what it means to have guns in the home. I also think it is important for people to understand how unlikely it is to ever have such a drastic need for a weapon.

As for Mossberg many consider its manufacturing q'ty much poorer that Win's or Rem's.
But why are you for a shotgun for home defense? Handling it isn't so easy as a handgun, while the power is more than enough for human target.
That might be the first Fred Eaglesmith quote I’ve ever seen on FR. Good one, though. BTW, I’ve got a Winchester 1300 Defender. 18 1/2” bbl, open choke and 7+1 capacity for either 2 3/4” or 3” shells.
Grab whichever one that’s loaded.

If/when a firearm is introduced into a home, careful thought needs to be put into where/how it will be kept, and EVERYONE in the house who will have access to it needs to know how to HANDLE it safely (not necessarily how to shoot it).
But that said, I think everyone should think about how they will protect themselves and their family.
Most homes have a fire extinguisher, but they don't expect to have a fire.
I have both, I got the 500 first then the 870, After shooting them both for some time now I prefer the 870 myself. It just feels better made and shoots a bit better.
