Put kangaroos, camels on Australian eco-menu: scientists

SYDNEY (AFP) – Saving the planet by eating kangaroos and wild camels may seem like pie in the sky, but the offbeat menu comes with a scientific stamp of approval in Australia.

The aim in both cases is to reduce damage to the environment, but the reasoning behind the push to put the animals on the menu is sharply different.

In the case of kangaroos, environmentalists say the national animal should become a dietary staple in place of cattle and sheep as part of the fight against global warming.

The farm animals make a major contribution to Australia's greenhouse gas emissions simply by belching and farting, while kangaroos emit negligible amounts of dangerous methane gas.

What I find humorous is that roos don’t fart. Oh and the actual use of the word fart in a ‘news’ story.

I’m thinking we now have an excuse for killing all the buffalo.

It was them or us.

Polar bears probably fart something awful. Especially after eating a seal or an environmental activist.

A three-year study found that Australia's population of more than a million feral camels is out of control and damaging fragile desert ecosystems, water sources, rare plants and animals.

I don't doubt that for a minute. The same thing happens in Arizona with the feral burros and in Nevada and other Great Basin states with "wild" horses. But we in the Interior West don't whine; we act.

Every year, the BLM (in concert with other agencies) performs a "roundup" to cull the herd numbers. The burros and horses are captured and sent to county seats where they become available for "adoption."

In this way, these non-native animals are kept in check. Sorry to say, those equines that aren't adopted are put down. But it has to be done and few people here in the Interior West whine about it.

This is not to say an adoption program for feral camels in Australia would work. But we all know what would work to cull the camel numbers. It would seem that the Aussie officials don't have the backbone to do it.

I think we need some extensive studies to verify this. Too bad, so sad, about all the environmental activists we’ll have to feed to polar bears in the process.

Well, your not whining because there’s a government solution for the Interior West. But if the government did nothing, I guess you guys would be raising holy hell about the donkeys and horses.

Knowing many Aussies and being there a couple of times, there’s no real love for the Kangaroos - it’s like they are white tail deer, except not as fun to hunt. I suppose there’s probably less love for the camels. Kangeroo is pretty tasty, there’s a special meal called “The Coat of Arms” kangaroo and emu. Tasty - but nothing to write home about.

on the plus side the polar bears are expected to increase in numbers due to the abundant food supply.

What do you mean we, kimo sabe? Or are you with the BLM?

What is being proposed is private enterprise not Government. Individuals collect camels and kangaroos, Other individuals pay to adopt (and serve them)

Well, your not whining because there’s a government solution for the Interior West.

For the most part, these equines do not live on private property -- they live on govt-owned land. FYI: The govt (state & federal) owns 91.9% of Nevada, and 50.2% of Arizona. The problems with non-native equines occur on govt land. I'm glad they are a part of the solution.

But if the government did nothing, I guess you guys would be raising holy hell about the donkeys and horses.

Surprisingly enough, it's typically the reverse. The locals love "their" wild burros and horses and hate to see them rounded up. But because there are numerous stories about local roundups, the local populace does seem to understand the need to cull the herds.

One last point: You would think that Westerners are the chief adopters of these equines. According to the BLM, however, more burros are adopted by residents of the Southeast than any other region. So that burro you see in a Tennessee pasture -- it probably came from the Black Mountains of Arizona.

Can we eat the “scientists”, environmentalists and global warming extremists instead?

Or are they too tough to swallow?

Good question, Tonto. But I don't have an answer because I don't know Australia law nor do I know if these camel herds are on govt land. If these herds are on govt land, then the govt would have the final say. Wouldn't they?

And, no, I'm not with the BLM. But I did spend the night at a Holiday Express.
