- personal story - I used to live in CA. Had someone trying to get in my home at 1 AM. Called 911. San Jose Police were “too busy” - had a big drug bust going down. Said they could come over in a couple hours. Asked if I had a gun.

Yes, but it was not registered.

Told them I could take care of myself and would call them if things escalated. Moved back to Texas.

Not sure, I think you can just take it with you provided you have a permit. I hope you’re moving to a red state.

Stick it in your trunk and go. Unless the cops have probable cause, they cannot pull you over and search your car. Items in the trunk are not considered part of the passenger compartment.

Load n go.

The law says handguns must be unloaded and in a locked container. The trunk counts as a locked container, so you could throw a handgun in the trunk and keep the ammo separate.

Rifle may be in the passenger compartment, even in plain view and unloaded (I recommend a case or blanket at the minimum). If a cop sees the gun you will be searched and your entire vehicle, even though there is no probable cause. It is for their safety and the publics. They will also want to divine(they will use the word determine) what your intent is.

Don't take it onto an airport facility as they frequently search cars and you will be arrested. If you live in a large city SFO, NYC, etc, they frequently ask you to open your trunk for soft inspection before allowing entrance. They do not have the authority to touch or search your items but they can deny entrance to a parking facility.

In CA you may transport any firearm you legally own in your car if it is not loaded. Put your handguns in the trunk, put your ammo anywhere you want it but do not have it in your pocket or close to hand(where you could possibly load it quickly into your gun). If the cops ask you where you are going, and they will, say you have been shooting and are going home, or that you are going shooting, either at a range or in a public forest(which is still legal). Handguns must be locked in a box and the trunk qualifies for that, unfortunately your glove box doesn't. Ammo isn't a problem unless it is close to hand, but consider putting that in your trunk also.

All these things are taught in CCW classes and even if you can't get one in your county(I have one in mine, easy to get in a red county)you can benefit from the classes.

“Load n go is a close relative of shoot, shovel and shutup?”

My Dad (now deceased) gave some pretty good advice, very close to your comment:

If you have to do something you “shouldn’t do”:

1. Don’t tell anyone you are going to do it.
2. Do it.
3. Don’t tell anyone you did it.

I recall reading somewhere how much higher the “unsolved crime” rate would be if perps would keep their mouths shut.

Braggers!
