World's Oldest Dog Turns 21 With Birthday Party, Cake

Long Island, NY (AHN) - Chanel, a dachshund, celebrated her 21st birthday with a party complete with cake Wednesday in New York.

Her owners, Denice and Karl Shaugnessey, took her to Manhattan's Dog Hotel and Spa, where they celebrated the milestone birthday party and received a certificate from a Guinness World Records official confirming Chanel's rank as oldest dog, England's The Daily Telegraph reported.

At 21, Chanel's age puts her at the human equivalent of 147 years old. She can't walk very far, and she wears special doggy goggles to prevent her cataracts from worsening.

"She's independent," Denice Shaugnessey told the New York Post. "If she didn't want to do something, she had a look she would give, and she usually got her way."

Chanel's red hair has turned white and she eats a special diet. She's happy to spend her days relaxing at home, only taking walks in the summer.

"She used to run three miles with me every day," Shaughnessy, who adopted Chanel from a Virginia shelter as a 6-week-old pup, told the Post. "She still enjoys a walk, but now she's carried for a lot of it."

Chanel became the oldest dog last spring when a 28-year-old beagle from Virginia died.

How in the world does anyone know who the oldest dog is?

“Chanel” is a wonderful name and I salute her longevity and her obvious style. Going white is quite the fashion statement and I’m sure she has a beautiful leash, collar, and sweater wardrobe to set off her tresses.

The dog that lives next store to me is 19. It’s a Yorky. He can’t hear or see very well but they still take him for walks. He doesn’t look very happy though.

When informed of her new honor of being the oldest living dog, Chanel could only offer four words: "Oh shit....I'm next"

I was just thinking Odysseus’s dog Argos would have to of been well over 20 since The wily one had been away from Ithaca for 20 years and Argos still recognized his master who had raised him from a pup.

My adorable Keeshond Keesha Suzanne left us last September at the age of 17. She never had a sick day in her life, just gradually wore down until she didn’t want to take another step. Terrifically sad, but if there’s such a thing as a “good death,” she had one, going to Doggie Heaven with a smile on her snout and my arm around her.

She wore wonderful hats, brooches, and the occasional off-the-shoulder tee. Such style, that girl.

YOu have a corgi! Fabulous dog. And your gorgeous collie/malamute was clearly the pick of the gene pool.

I really miss my Black Labs, Cinder and Murphy. 15 and 11. Best dogs ever. :)

Now we have Rufus the Doofus, a Basset Hound, and Miss Lucy, a Yellow Lab. She’s a year old and just full of it, but is coming along well in her training. She loves to chase them bunnies, LOL!

She's very famous for her book 'Corgiville Fair.' I have a whole collection of her books. She was an illustrator while she raised her own family in a very simple manner. (Her book would make a GREAT gift. As a wife, myself, I know all about gifts, LOL!)
