Time traveller lands in Cannes [Dr. Who]
BBC News ^ | May 14, 2009 | Victoria Lindrea

As he prepares to step into the role of Doctor Who, Matt Smith is just months away from becoming a major star, continuously stalked by the paparazzi, Whovians, et al.

But, for now, he is keeping a low profile in the French Riviera, as he promotes the short film Together, which opened Critics' Week at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday.

The 26-year-old star has bundles of charm. I am under strict instructions not to ask questions about the new series of Doctor Who (his agent hovers close by, growling), so I try a leftfield approach: No, he did not travel to the French Riviera in his Tardis, Smith reliably assures me.

He came on board his private jet with John Travolta in the pilot seat.

OK, so it was a budget airline, but at least he has a sense of humour. On this showing, it can be hoped that Smith will retain David Tennant's ebullient approach to the role of The Doctor, rather than returning to Christopher Ecclestone's darker portrayal.

And no, he has yet to meet any Doctor Who fans on the Croisette.

In fact, there is a quality of mischievousness to the young actor - a lightness and an energy that echo Tennant. Though Smith has plenty of his own style, not least a flock of hair that is rapidly becoming his own personal motif.

Hey, I wasn't talking about in front of the camera. I know Billie Piper is finger-lickin' good.

Tom Baker, of course, but Ace could totally take Sarah Jane in a fight...

Being a rather recent Dr. Who fan “my” Dr. Who has been David Tennant (although I started with Christopher Eccleston).

Are there debates about which was “best” like there are for James Bond?

They were all pretty good in their own way. Blaise Pascal knew The Doctor personally and described him thus:

All history is one immortal man who continually learns.

Thus to pick any one incarnation of The Doctor is to pick them all. Anything else is to admit to being insane as that which is whole cannot be divided.

“LOL! I hadn’t read your post before my response. I’ll have to say there’s a toss-up for me re: Companions. I liked Sarah Jane, but I also liked Leela.”

I was a desperate and dateless college student in the mid ‘80s when I got hooked on Doctor Who. My first episodes were 4th Doctor and Sarah Jane, so I will always have a soft spot for Elisabeth Sladen.

I’ll admit Sarah Jane is not good in a fight, though her screams could inflict ear damage on an opponent.

However, could Ace take down K-9?

Other than that, they look pretty similar to me. I don’t think Martha or Rose would fall for the latest guy. Heck, not even Donna Noble...

Just to echo the others ... no question about it, Tom Baker WAS the Doctor! (And he could run through the exact same tunnels each week like nobody’s business! :)

Hmmm, it depends on if K-9 is actually functioning or not...

Davison may have been the single best actor to play The Doctor in the original series! And Colin Baker is not Tom Baker’s son. Unless you meant that as a joke.

And, the promising thing, is that Moffat, the man behind Blink is the new guy in charge of the show.

Makes one hopeful that he has an idea and a plan with these younger actors that might work.

Moffat was also behind the one with the gas mask kid with Eccleston, and the lady in the fireplace in season two. He’s behind virtually all my favourite episodes of new who.
