Good morning Freeper gardeners. This weekend marks the end of May and I hope everyone’s gardens are doing well. I know some have had to delay planting due to weather and we all hope conditions have improved for you.
So far this weekend is looking like a good one, weather wise, all across the Nation except for some lingering rain in the extreme NE. Lets get gardening!

Tomato and pepper planting this weekend. Here , in CNY, it’s not wise to plant much before traditional Memorial Day.
Oh, meant to say thanks for the ping and thread.
I know you will enjoy it. We have two other Master Gardeners on the thread and I know you will provide us with some good advice.

My report from S. Utah...
Tomato plants have started to set fruit. The pots are now on the east side of the house. In a few weeks, they will be in full shade, due to the heat. (In S. Utah, planting tomatoes in the ground is a guaranteed dead end to tomatoes, it’s too hot and too sunny.)
Strawberries and raspberries (also in pots and on the east side) are on steroids.
Columbines are the toughest little plants ever. My landlord cannot believe how well they do here. They are from Washington State and never considered planting them in the desert. lol But they are very happy sitting under my apricot tree, blooming away!

My garden is getting thoroughly watered this morning.
I have 6 kinds of tomaters, 3 kind of peppers, basil, cukes and yellow squash.
It’s about 20% of the size of last years. I made it way too big last year, it looked horrible and weedy, it was just too much to keep up with. This year, it’s nice and small, and already completely mulched.
Since I have a tiller, I helped out about a dozen neighbors getting their gardens going, too.
Sometimes we Master Gardeners sound all scientific.
The rest of the time, we just “wing it” like everyone else. LOL :)
My landlord was funny the other day, she said “Gotta love ya. You keep planting until you WILL a plant to live.” heh

Got my 30 tomato(e) plants, 45 pepper plants of various varieties, red & white onions and a few shallots started.

Traditionally for Western SD the last frost day is May 15th.
The weather as been so bad and cool that we are a whole week late. Hmmm, not so bad I guess. Bought four tomato and 4 pepper plants Wednesday and will get them in pots tomorrow.
Does anyone have any experience with garlic? I ordered some and found out it was too hot down here in SC and read that it should be planted in fall. I left it unwrapped in a box and the bulbs still look good but the odor is getting really strong. Should I plant the bulbs anyway or just forget it and use them for cooking?
My tomatoes are starting out REALLY, REALLY slow. I started them at the beginning of April and they just stayed runty little things.
I planted them outdoors, thinking that it would help them grow better, and have not seem much progress and we’ve had warm and wet weather.
Are some varieties just slow starters? They’re Italian plum tomatoes for sauce.
Mornin’ all! I’ll be in and out as usual. :) Daughter is sposed to go in the hosp today and they’re going to induce labor. I actually got a day off from the garden center and I have TONS of stuff I want/need to get done in the garden/yard but I doubt I’ll get to any of them.
The heat and the bugs are here to stay, along with the weeds. We got the last of our broccoli plants disced in and planted peanuts yest. As soon as we pull the vidalias and peas, we’re going to plant lima beans—Jackson Wonder and Early thorogreen- and I got some Taylor Horticultural beans to plant, and some Dixie Lee field peas. In another week or so, the weeds will have completely taken over. LOL We both work full time, and what little we get done is after work and before the bugs drive us inside!

You know, lady...those should work as advertised. I’ll be very interested in your results; I’m originally from Ohio so we have a similar climate.
If he hangs those bad boys on the south side of your porch, they should do great. Tomatoes are considered a vine. If your space is limited, you might want to make sure he chooses a determinate variety. Lest you end up with a jungle. LOL

I am doing a “japanese” tomato ring this year, but is has been to cold and rainy to plant this week. Hoepfully the tomatoes will go in over the weekend. I have two kinds of pole beans in, lettuce, peas, onions, yellow squash, zucchini, patta pan squash, and a bunch of herbs.
