n a confirmation of persistent stereotypes, an international team of psychologists have determined that when it comes to one-night stands, men have much lower standards than women do. The study, published in the journal Human Nature, revealed that when asked whether they would "go out with," "go home with," or "go to bed with," a member of the opposite sex, men were universally more willing than their female counterparts, regardless of how attractive the potential partner was. Women, in contrast, were much more pickyagreeing to head home or sleep with men only if they were very good looking.
The research is a follow up to a pioneering handful of studies of "short term mating" in which researchers sent young men and women on the prowl at a Florida university, instructing them to approach people attractive enough that they would actually consider sleeping with them, and within two sentences of conversation, see if they would agree to a date, a trip back to the questioner's apartment, or a roll in the hay. (Presumably, for research purposes they didn't actually need to follow through on the request, merely record the response.) Whereas no women would sleep with the investigators, and only 3% agreed to go back to their apartments, a full 75% of men agreed to sleep with the female questioners, regardless of how cute they were. (Not very, according to the study authors, who put both the male and female recruits somewhere between slightly unattractive and moderately attractive. Ouch.)

Stimulus?
That’s exactly what I thought. how many millions of tax dollars are being spent providing fat salaries for behavioral “science” researchers?
As if we all didn’t already know this. And of course, it makes perfect biological sense. If a man can spread his seed around it’s to his genetic advantage. Especially if he’s not going to have to help raise the kid. Women, on the other hand, invest much into each offspring, so they have to be choosier. They get fewer chances to pass on their genes.
I think the “study” was probably a guy at a bar, trying to figure out why nobody was willing to sleep with him, even though he lowered his standards.
Just the way it is.
Shocking results!
Pikers. The gold standard of research were the Europeans that got paid to study the brain activity of women having orgasms.
In some ways Europe is ahead of us.
Imagine going home after work. “Hard day at the office?”
“You have no idea.”
That explains my dry spell from 18-27.
Alex, gimme The Bleedin’ Obvious for a thousand...
Wonder if the researcher stood poised with clipboard and pen awaiting the subject’s response.
Back in grad school I got lucky in a bar one night.
I saw a woman at the bar waiting for her drinks and I was taken by her beauty. My eyes followed her as she walked from the bar alone with her two drinks (it was 2 for the price of 1 night) and stopped at a railing on the balcony overlooking the dance floor. As I was planning on approaching her to chat her up some guy comes out of nowhere and walks up to her. He leans over and says something into her ear. She hadn’t even have a chance to take a sip of her drinks yet and she is now grabbing her coat and leaving with him!
Lucky for me I had the presence of mind to walk up to where she was standing and salvage the 2 untouched whiskey sours.
Democrats!
On one hand, it does seem like a ridiculous waste of resources to prove what everyone knew anyway . . . men and women are just different and the old stereotypes often have some basis in fact. On the other hand, an awful lot of academics believe otherwise and I for one am glad to see evolutionary psychologists like David Buss and Stephen Pinker finally demonstrating that the blank slate picture of human nature is mostly just bunk.
Also, short, fat, bald guys have a harder time overcoming their disadvantaged appearance if a long-term sharing of resources isn’t at stake.
