Thousands of prehistoric hippo bones found in Cyprus are adding to a growing debate on the possible role of humans in the extinction of larger animals 12,000 years ago.

First discovered by an 11-year-old boy in 1961, a tiny rock-shelter crammed with hippo remains radically rewrote archaeological accounts of when this east Mediterranean island was first visited by humans.

It has fired speculation of being the first takeaway diner used by humans to cook and possibly dispatch meat. It also adds to growing speculation, controversial in some quarters, that humans could have eaten some animals to extinction.

Those pesky humans. Always eating to survive. Fred Flinstone’s fault.

Umm, don’t we still have hippos?

I don't. Probably not the average Cypriot either.

Obviously I meant the planet.

I don't know that there are pygmy hippos and this type of pygmy hippo is said to be extinct.

Hippos are noted as being the most dangerous animal on earth. But, if these were “pygmy” hippos, perhaps they were delectible.

“These were pretty sophisticated people. Certainly if they could figure out how to navigate the Mediterranean, even at a small distance, they knew what they were doing.”

Right. I hold to the theory that they used Cyprus as a breeding farm for pygmy hippos, much in the way that Tyson raises gazillions of chickens.

Then the owners of the factory or even retail customerscould come to the island and pick up their meat requirements either on the hoof or packaged into cuts of meat of their choice.

Certainly the storage of large numbers of bones gives credence to the hippo factory theory.
