That happens all the time when taking flash pics outside in the dark.

Assuming there is an element of truth to the tales, tremendously dilated pupils could indicate any number of popular, recreational drugs. LSD is probably out, due to the preternatural calm, uniformly exhibited. X (ecstacy) dilates the pupils as well, but hostile intent is not a noted side effect, it’s more of a feeling of oneness with humanity, a desire to be with and have physical contact with, other people. Other drugs, methamphetamine pops out, but preternatural calm isn’t at all associated with it.

That's what's great about such tales because discounting the supernatural element - you are still left wondering why people saw what they saw or claim to.

Since this is a story started in the 90s - and drug use in the rural areas took off - maybe people not used to seeing such behavior created freaky tales around them? But, as you said the likely candidate is crystal meth but as you observed "methamphetamine pops out, but preternatural calm isn’t at all associated with it".

Fun to contemplate.

By one day. I was in Amman, on my way back when it happened.

The first thing I asked when I was met at the airport in Baghdad tbis morning was about how our local colleagues fared.

Everyone's OK - one co-worker's home was pretty badly damamged in one of the blasts, but nobody hurt.

Everyone's pretty much on edge now. I hope and pray that it was an isolated incident.

Yes, I had heard of it. I have been reading paranormal information since I was a kid! In fact, when I was 7, my mother caught me reading my uncle's small paperback novel - How to Make ESP Work For You - and it went on from there....hahaha!
