Angels clinch AL West with 11-0 rout of Rangers

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—The Angels soaked the jersey in beer, champagne and tears, holding Nick Adenhart’s(notes) No. 34 high in the middle of the celebration he missed.

Los Angeles is headed back to the playoffs for the sixth time in eight years, and the Angels intend to go with the memory of their late teammate alongside them. The 22-year-old pitcher’s death in an April car accident roiled their season early on, but it couldn’t sink this resilient team.

Kendry Morales(notes) homered and drove in three runs, and the Angels wasted no time clinching their third straight AL West title with an 11-0 victory over the second-place Texas Rangers on Monday night.

(snip)

About 10 minutes into their clubhouse celebration, the players grabbed Adenhart’s jersey and gave it a dousing. The Angels have taken Adenhart’s jersey on every road trip and kept his locker intact in memory, and reliever Kevin Jepsen(notes) brought the shirt back to the clubhouse from the dugout for the celebration.

BASEBALL PING LIST

If you would like to be on the ping list let me know.

This will be a medium volume ping list during the baseball season and a low volume ping list when all life stops in late October.

The AL central is going to come right down to the wire. The tigers hold a 2 game lead over the Twins and will open their 4 game series with a double header today and friday they finish with a 3 game series against the White sox.

We might wind up with a one game playoff to decide that.

It’s to the benefit of the Tigers that they are playing on their home field. I feel sorry for any team dealing with Twins fans in the Metrodome at this point in the season.

No kidding, the Twins Swept the Tigers in the Metrodome last week.

The Tigers have had a pretty amazing season despite some pretty average play at times. They’ve held the lead since May, by as much as 7 games to a single day tied for first with the White Sox.

Honoring their deceased team mate Nick Adenhart was a class act. Wish them the best in the coming playoffs.

Amazing that the Rangers lasted this long before folding. They’re usually in post-season form right after the all-star split.

AL Central was the only race worth watching this year. I’m gonna pull for the Twins because of Mauer & Morneau. But despite being an average team, the Tigers have the stopper in the rotation and that pays huge dividends in the pennant race and playoffs.

If the Twins don’t make it, I don’t know who I’ll root for. I absolutely detest LAD, NYY & Bosox. I’d probably go for Angels by default, mostly because I think Sciosia is such a good manager.

Tiger fan myself. In any case its going to be a long night for both teams. They’re tied at one each in the bottom of the 9th right now.

That’s just what they need; an extra-inning game as part of a doubleheader. Guaranteed bullpen burnout.

Is this one of those doubleheaders where they empty out the stadium between games or can you catch both? I love baseball, but as long as the games last I don’t know if I could watch two. This summer we did double duty in Chicago; Cubs/Braves in Wrigley at 1:00 and Sox/Indians at US Cellular at 7:00. By the middle of the Sox game, we were getting a little weary even though we’re pretty rabid fans.

They’ll clear the place out before game two.

Twins leading now 3-1.

Verlander pitching for the Tigers in tonights game. He pitches deep into games. Around 125 pitches on average.

The Angels may call themselves "Los Angeles", but that's only to needle the Dodgers.

What's this with red uniform shirts at home? That's what softball teams do. Home teams should wear white, visiting teams gray or faint blue. This is one more symbol of the decadence of baseball under Selig's failed stewardship!
