ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Authorities in northeastern Pennsylvania said a woman was killed by her pet black bear as she cleaned its cage.
State police said 37-year-old Kelly Ann Walz was mauled to death Sunday evening by the 350-pound bear.
A state Game Commission spokesman said Walz kept the bear inside a steel and concrete cage near her house about 20 miles northeast of Allentown.
Officials said Walz threw a shovelful of dog food to one side of the cage to distract the bear while she cleaned the other side. At some point, the bear turned on her and attacked.
The bear was shot and killed. No information was available about who shot the bear.
Game officials said Walz also owned a Bengal tiger and an African lion. They said she had licenses to own the animals.

Yogi didn’t quite live up to his usual stereotype?
..but didn't renew her license to be stupid
The mind of the bear - “Hmmmmm ... shovel-ful of dry dog food ... fresh meat .... decisions, decisions...”
She should have shown the license to the bear.
And all this happened after she wrote a preachy anti-hunting letter to her local paper.
Hey there Mistah Ranger! No, that’s not a human femur in my mouth, notatall, good sir!
A 350 pound “pet” black bear. Something doesn’t compute.
She should have kept her pet bear in the house.
My neighbor has a 170# great Dane “lap dog”, so I can see this...
I can’t imagine the bear was really happy in a cement and steel cage.
Not another bag of “Old Roy” kibbles - To hell with this! I want somthing with gravy! Waitress?
I have a “lap shark” - is this a good idea?
Depends, are you wanting any children in your future?
Do you have a link to that letter?
This story and that really should go together....
There’s a lot wrong with the story. ‘Pet bear’ for one thing, that doesn’t compute. And a bear being kept in a 15x15 enclosure. I’m sure she thought she was doing good but really, does someone who loves wild animals keep them in a too-small steel enclosure?
“Some days you eat the bear, some days the bear eats you”
She forgot the number 1 rule: Never treat wild animals as pets!
I guess, but IMHO there is a big difference between a bear and a dog....
LOL!
Did you know this woman?
ROFL. Good one.
ping
I wonder if anyone was holding her beer when she went into the cage to clean up?
She should have given him a pic-a-nic basket.
What computes is that she was probably an exotic animal breeder.
I knew one that owned lions, tigers , bears ,etc. ,etc.
He told me 10 years ago that his siberian tiger cub was worth $70k. This business can be very profitable but it does have its expenses. Try feeding these animals for one.
The local police would take stray dogs up to his farm and put them in the cage with the lions. The local diary farmers would call him when the had an old cow that died.
If she had house-trained the bear, better yet, toilet-trained him, she wouldn’t have had to clean the bear’s cage. Animals is no different from us humans, sez Peter “Princeton Professor” Singer, so first of all, no human should be given a license to own an animal—that’s slavery, and second of all, if some dang human’s going to own an animal, the first thing she owes to that animal is to potty-train him so that he can relieve himself in decency and privacy in the bathroom.
And so she doesn’t have to clean his cage.
So he doesn’t have to eat her when he cleans his cage.
If only people would listen to Peter The Professor Singer of Princeton.
You know the bear wasn’t happy in a cage! Caging wild animal in small enclosures makes my blood boil! Serves her right! Yes I hate zoos too but at least most of those zoo animals were born in a cage and don’t know any different. I’ll bet this woman caught a cub in the wild and caged it.
Still, to me, these people are one card short of a full deck.
Assuming the dogs were alive and conscious when they did this, that's disgusting. These "local police" should be put in the cage with the lions - without their guns, of course, as the dogs didn't have any guns.
I also had a friend who raised exotic animals. Your friend was asking for trouble by feeding the cat live dogs. My friends gave their cats cold ... as in from the fridge, raw chicken. They didn’t ever want them to taste warm meat..... too much like people you know.
They had a cougar they raised from a cub as a pet. My kids called me one day and said “He is so cute... he likes to suck on your fingers while he is falling asleep”.
=8-O yikes!
He ran around their house, played with the kids, was a member of the family for a long time til he got big enough that they kept him in a cage.
Even so, one day my friend was cleaning the cage and slipped and fell. The cat saw his chance and attacked him. He managed to get out of the cage, went and got his gun and shot the cat. THEN he went to the hospital.
They are not pets. Ever.
"Grrrrr. I told you for the last time, leave my s**t alone!"
lol
I was thinking the exact same thing.
Ping.
Sorry that post was tongue in cheek. It was an educated guess but a guess nonetheless.
Heck they haven’t even got enough for a euchre deck.
That’s funny
And I thought the Whitehall Mall was dangerous....
You give them way too much credit. These folks, in truth, aren't playing with any cards higher than a 5 of any suit.
I love Newfies, one of the best dogs there are. Big, lovable, loyal, and gentle. The only problem I have with them is during the fall they are burr magnets that end up taking hours to clean their coats when they come back in.
I didn’t know her. Saylorsburg is about 75 minutes east of me.
I heard this on Channel 16 this morning while getting ready for work. Why would anyone keep a caged bear?
You’ve got me. I have enough just walking the dog... :-)
I absolutely aggree. That policeman was later arrested and resigned on another charge having to do with drugs. He was a sadistic A$$hole.
Because if you turn it loose it will eat you.
That’s just funny.
Didn’t see that coming
