19 October 1939-

Herman Goering issued a verbal order to a Dr. Kajetan Muehlmann asking him to undertake the immediate securing of all Polish art treasures.

Kajetan Mühlmann - he was a Staatssekretar in Seyss-Inquart’s government in Austria 1938, and has social and professional connections to Seyss-Inquart, Göring, Heydrich (as undercover agent?) and also to Hitler concerning artistic matters.

He was captured by the U.S. Army in the Austrian Alps on June 13, 1945. Later he was transferred to an American POW camp, where he gets a lot of privileges because of his special talent as painter.

Dr. Muehlmann himself gives evidence of this order in Document 3042, found in the document book last introduced as Exhibit USA 375.

His War Crimes Trial statement, as entered by Col. Story in Georing’s trial:

Kajetan Muehlmann states under oath:

“I have been a member of the N.S.D.A.P. since 1st April, 1938. I was Brigadier General (Oberfuehrer) in the S.S.

I was never an illegal Nazi.

I was the special deputy of the Governor General of Poland, Hans Frank, for the safeguarding of art treasures in the Government General, October, 1939 to September, 1943.

Goering, in his function as chairman of the Reich Defence Council, had commissioned me with this duty.

I confirm that it was the official policy of the Governor General Hans Frank, to take into custody all important art treasures which belonged to Polish public institutions, private collections and the Church. I confirm that the art treasures mentioned were actually confiscated; and it is clear to me that they would not have remained in Poland in case of a German victory, but they would have been used to complement German artistic property.

Signed and sworn to by Dr. Muehlmann.”

intersting account of the sinking in scapa flow. especially the part about using the ships anchor lights to attack. fairly incredible that anchored warchips in time of war would be so illuminated.

guenther prien, the U boat captain, did not survive the war. its believed he was sunk south of iceland, possibly by the Wolverine. good article here:

The discouraging thing about this response by Roosevelt was that this was to Einstein’s letter from August 2nd. It took 2 and a half months just for a response from FDR.

The Board that FDR makes reference to was the Advisory Committee on Uranium. They meet for the first time in two days so I’ll save what I have on that till then.

This version of Case Yellow is merely a retread [mostly] of the Schlieffen Plan of 1906; and one for which the British and French were ready.

It was during a briefing on Yellow, I believe in November, that Hitler asked Halder or Brauchitsch, about using the Ardennes. They put him off.

I believe it was a combination of two princial factors, the capture of the plans for the early version of Yellow by the Belgians when a Luftwaffe plane carrying a staff officer with the plans landed in foggy weather; and Manstein’s dinner with Hitler prior to assumption of an infantry Corps command [Halder booted him out as Rundstedt’s C/S for pushing the Schickelsschnitt], that got the ball rolling.

This ‘migration’ was organized by Himmler, via his new powers as Reichs Commissioner for the Strengthening of Germanness. The principal executive agency was the SS. The USSR was more than pleased to remove a potential flashpoint in their relations with the Germans, and acquire the newly returned Germans’ property in the Baltic.

Those less pleased were the thousands of Poles forcibly removed to the Government General, a move for which little or no provision, planning or organization had been made.

Totally Off-Topic side-note:

It was about this time that my Grandfather was assigned to rebuilding the Railroad bridges in Central Warsaw. He would spend the next year there.
