Gotta love this, too:

“We’ve got three and a half million layabouts laying about on benefits and I’m 76 getting up at six o’clock in the morning to go to work to keep them.

“Let’s get everybody back to work so we can save a couple of billion and cut tax, not to keep sticking it on.”

“All due respect to M Caine, but he needs to be put out to pasture. Can’t they find an actor less than 135 who wants to work these days?”

Heck, if others feel this way too ... he can join Bob Dole and do some Viagra commercials. It’ll get the old age home rocking and rolling.

I’ve long thought that UFO could be redone, and I gather Paramount is planning to do so right now.

However, more than the plot lines, which were fairly ordinary, the series was “mod stylish”. This made the show, as much as anything else. It is ironic that even in 1970, that show was more stylistically futuristic than what we see in today’s styles.

It was low budget attention to detail. As with its American contemporary, Star Trek, which was known for its unique sound effects and timelessly futuristic stylishness and costumes.

UFO was memorable for things like DeLorean style automobiles, vertical Ericofon telephones, Nehru jackets, Beatle boots, hair styles, silver miniskirts and purple wigs, and sonic guns. Not just for the beautiful people, but for everyone.

But don’t forget things like architecture, Googie and Space Age design, everything from lava lamps, ball chairs, home sculpture and fountains, acute angles, textured concrete, etc. Things people dreamed of and wanted, but can only now afford, and only now are they made with quality. Flat screen televisions behind remote control panel doors, cellphones, design lighting and all the other technological innovations they didn’t yet have.

Today we have the technology and quality, but we no longer have the style. We need design like that, but not for cheap things like gas stations and fast food joints. Unfortunately design today is utilitarian and industrial-bland.

But that could change with a show like UFO. A show that people could look at and say, I want things like that, style like that. I want to live in a place that looks futuristic.

Great point. UK is like the US in the late 60s/50s where the establishment turned a blind to deviants reaking havoc on the street. That is why those Bronson movies were so popular and such cultural icons.

The Man Who Would Be King.

One of my favs, and one of Caine’s (and Connery’s) best.

Colonel Lake was smoking! UFO was more interesting tahn Star Trek. IF they had had half of Star Trek budget it would have rcoked. Ed Bishop as Colonel Straker was more interesting than Kirk.

Things like Colonel Lake! Great show. If they had a little bigger budget it would have been awesome.

Nothing wrong with Wanda V. UFO was in a lot of respects good in its own rights. I didn’t see UFO until late 90s when Sci-Fi ran episodes on Sundays. Straker was one tough dude and could hold his own against Kirk. If there was going to be a restart of UFO, I would hope it would stay story and character driven instead endless effects and lame plots.

Ed Bishop was a better actor with his brooding Straker. The babes were hot. The show was probably done on a tiny tiny budget.

Ed was a very good actor and as a rule liked him in just about everything I saw him in. UFO had some nice eye candy even though the purple wigs took a little getting used to. Their budget was probably Dr. Who caliber at best. Gerry did well with what he had.

An attractive woman. Completely sun-damaged skin on her chest, though.
