After-sale warranty firm says 17% of Apple's laptops fail within three years

Apple's line of laptops ranked fourth in a multi-year reliability survey of nine notebook makers, according to a study of 30,000 portable computers published today by a company that provides after-sale warranties.

SquareTrade, which broke out the warranty claims of its customers by manufacturers, said that Apple took the No. 4 spot, behind ASUS, Toshiba and Sony, which held No. 1 through No. 3, respectively.

I have an HP tablet that given me nothing, but grief.

Of course, Vista doesn’t help.

This is impossible because Apple is perfect.

I’ve had a full-sized ASUS laptop for 1-1/2 years now. Rock solid. It did however come with a slick marketing Powerpoint on the desktop that had almost every other word misspelled.

I have a cheap Compaq that has been very good. I have a cheap Dell and it is okay too.

I guess ANUS came out better that the Apple Kool Aid Powerbook.

(ps I know who asus is).

Whoever wrote this is obviously jealous of Apple owners and is lying. There can be no other explanation.

I have a ASUS desktop, their customer service and tech support sucks.

I am also waiting for Windows 7, when I purchased the PC in July they said that Win 7 would be shipped to me when it came out. I forwarded my proof of purchase and nothing...

I think I’ll go back to Dell they are much better. (Did I say that????)

The projected failure rate of Apple’s notebooks within three years, added SquareTrade, was 17.4%.

ASUS, Toshiba and Sony, on the other hand, sported projected three-year malfunction rates of 15.6%, 15.7% and 16.8%.

Those are hardly even stastistica;;y significant. PLUS there is NO indication in the article as to what the ‘failure’ mechanism is. I have seen people do some really stupid things with their machines and then wonder why they don’t work.

I bought an ASUS barebones system and it is ok other than the power supply. It is very unique and has a fan going bad after less than a year.

My ASUS desktop has been running for four years with no problems - just bought a Toshiba laptop and it runs VISTA just great ... my friends who bought MAC’S ... not so much ...

Yup, hardly even statistically significant.
Now compare the price...

And why am I not surprised that HP came in dead last...

I got one of those super wide HP media edition lap tops for a gift three years ago. It was incredibly flimsy. The lid/monitor began swaying around within a few weeks. Within a year the hinges were broke and it would no longer close. Then it just failed to start up one day. I checked out the new ones at the store, and it seems they haven't improved a bit.

It is truly shocking that Macs aren't indestructible. And the sad thing is, when they go you're out $1,500 instead of $600.

The only apple product I have ever owned is my ipod, which is great. PC wise, I currently have a toshiba satellite that I’ve used for the past four years without a hitch.

I bought a MacBook Pro and when I took it out of the box, it had a big dent in the aluminum body. I returned it for a replacement that had a chunk of dust or debris sandwiched between the layers of glass on the screen. I gave up and ordered a ThinkPad. My ThinkPad has better specs than the Mac, and is better built. Apple is overpriced and poor quality.

Simple. I still have my Mac book Pro from 5 years ago. It is going strong and beats heck out of most other lap tops out there. Yeah I will by another sometime in the future and that one will still be working when your other laptpos drop

I can’t honestly comment on the longevity of my laptops. I usually spill something on them and that’s what kills them. That’s why I always go for the extended service plan for a laptop.

I’ve already killed a Mac this way, and I had it less than a year.
