How often do you shop for groceries?

I don't mean for the last-minute half-gallon of milk or package of cigarettes from the convenience store, but the heavy-duty grocery shopping.

All the older siblings and their spouses appeared to shop once a week, filling up the automobile or van to the rafters.

I on the other hand have always emulated the parents, who shopped for groceries every single day excepting Sundays (but then and again, it needs pointed out franksolich has no spouse and dependents, so it's a somewhat different sort of thing).

In the town of circa 3,000 alongside the Platte River of Nebraska, where I spent my childhood, and in the town of circa 3,000 in the Sandhills of Nebraska, the routine of the parents never changed; they went to the grocery store every day (excepting Sundays), usually about 5:00 p.m., and until we were teenagers, hauled my younger brother and I along with them.

That’s why I mentioned that people who live far from stores are going to be attracted to big places like Costco or Sam’s but I can assure you as a very price conscious person that more often than NOT those places are not more economical. One does have to consider time and gas though so I get you completely.

I have even priced dog food and depending on the deal some of the other stores offer, even that is not cheaper.

My dad and mom always went to BJs and Sam’s Club and when they got older I had to help them - that’s when I realized what a rip off those places are. Also, if you buy some huge jar of food and it is cheaper but you end up throwing half out, it is not worth it. Paper and canned stuff is a different story.

One more thing... I do not like eating stuff that’s been frozen for awhile - that’s only for emergencies.

Plus Europeans frequently need to re-stock items because they are made in such small sizes. I have to buy jelly every two weeks because the jars are so small whereas in the states I can buy a jumbo jar and not think about needing it again for a few months.

I live in Europe (Sweden) and have lived in both rural and urban Europe. Currently I live in the city and go to the grocery about 4 times a week. However, I think many Americans would be surprised how much like us the Swedes really are. Outside of the city, they have enormous choices of "big box" stores and are very much a consumer society. Ofcourse, the punitive taxation puts limits on how much they can consume.

In the states, I went to SuperWalmart once a week where I bought drinks, yogurts, cereals, etc. Then I went to different stores a few times throughout the week. Trader Joes, Fry's, etc. for certain items that I could get only at those stores.

Either way, grocery shopping is my worst chore. Hands down.

Once a month for big things, and a few times a month for little things. I admit to being somewhat of one of those evil “Survivalist” types and keep a good stock of food that is rotated just in case.. but you cant keep a freezer full of meat forever.. lol so we DO shop once a month and do a huge costco run.

LOL--there's a surprising number of FRs who can get very intense about food.

Laugh, but we usually get 20 cases at costco in anch on one of our fall supply trips. I'd rather spend 19 bucks/case over 55 bucks/case at our local store. People gawk at costco when I come thru with that cart full, ha. I usually start walkin like I'm clampin my butt, ready to not make it to the john, really get a few harrs.

But no joke, you have to do these things or you end up like the Indians & local dysfunctional Whites who tend to live way out in the sticks. They live off salmon, caribou, moose, snared rabbits, porcupines, lynx ect. Personally, I can't do without bacon, chicken, lasagna, pork ribs, ect. You can sure live cheap out here, but not how I choose to do it.

We usually plant 300 lb seed tatoes, a lb of carrot seed, 1000 brocculli plants, ect. I could always survive if everything went to crap, but sure like my big screen, super fan, and center ice; so hope she all holds together. Wife and I are teachers, so our incomes are pretty safe if the dollar doesn't end up being worth a dime.

Also have a 1000 gal fuel tank as our local guy is 6 bucks/gal. We usually fly 20 sam's pizza's in every couple months, frozen and uncooked. When I do get into town, those golden arches are the first place I stop, boy I miss those big macs after a few months, and chinese.

Wife and I were originally from westmoreland co, pa. You from Tioga Co?

We lived in Sutton, 20 miles from Wasilla, then moved out into the interior near Canadian border. We live where the Yukon comes in from Canada, 4 miles from the border; been out this way 10 years now.

I had the good fortune of getting to know Sarah Palin in the early 90's; talked to her every couple weeks back then. She's the real deal and done alot of good things when she was mayor and as governor. I just wish for once, they would take a look at her record, what she accomplished, but they prefer to look at garbage. I talked to her again this last spring when she visited our community, the politics hasn't changed her one bit.

good to know. thanks for the stand up comments. I hope she is the real deal......I see chrissy matthews has called ‘bams blunders as “carteresque” ...the stage is set for the second Reagan and she is the only one to fit the bill.

When I was growing up my parents, and most of the others in the area, shopped every two weeks. It was 45 miles to the nearest grocery store that actually had low prices and every one drove to that one. So, every two weeks, the pickup was loaded down with food and my mom made it last for two weeks sometimes almost 3 because of the way my step-father was paid. Myself, I shop about twice a week and sometimes do small errands in between.
