Finns appeal for help against USSR
Sunday, December 10, 1939 www.onwar.com
In Helsinki... The government of Finland issues a general appeal for aid, stating that it has been attacked by the Soviet Union “without the slightest cause,” adding that “our position as the active outpost of western civilization gives us the right to expect the active resistance of other civilized nations.”
The Winter War... The Finns successful halt Soviet divisions, north of Lake Ladoga, in the battle of Kollaa begun December 7th.
In Geneva... The League of Nations continues to discuss the conflict between Finland and the USSR.
In Washington... The American government grants Finland a $10 million credit for agricultural supplies, a gesture largely due to Finland being the only country to have paid war debts from the World War I to the United States.
In Canada... The first Canadian troop convoy sails from Halifax, with 5 liners under heavy escort.
In the Gulf of Bothnia... The Soviet submarine S-1 sinks (in error) the German ship Bolheim, near Finland.

I remember the “Rotogravure” section in local papers when I was a kid (’60s).
I wonder if any of today’s papers still have a “Rotogravure” section?

By the way, I see the National Labor Relations Board was already communist and corrupt to the core by 1939.

I remember the Rotogravure section in local papers when I was a kid (60s).Before I started nosing around in old NY Times issues the only time I had heard the term was Fred Astaire singing the title song in "Easter Parade."

In case you movie people missed it, there is a big movie promo piece on today’s regular news thread. Frank Nugent has escaped from the entertainment page.

There is a story that states when the Nazi’s occupied Paris in 1940 that they entered Picasso’s Paris studio. Upon looking at some of his more darker works on display one German asked Picasso, “Did you do this?”
To which Picasso replied, “No, you did.”

If I had printed the whole article we could see if it contained a public option.
I think 1/1/40 is a significant date for social security. There are a couple articles coming up that I printed but haven't really read yet. Maybe it marks the beginning of pay outs.

"Jews Plight Held Critical in Poland 9"
"First-hand information of the Jewish situation in the German-occupied section of Poland, particularly in Warsaw, has been obtained here from Dr. Henryk Szoskies, vice president of the Hebrew religious community in the former Polish capital, who escaped last month."Jews all over the German part of Poland live in constant fear of new persecutions and new orders making life even harder, he said.
"In his capacity as representative of the Jewish community, he had many contacts with the German authorities -- the army Gestapo [secret police] and Nazi party officials.
"He came to the conclusion that the Nazis' aim was physical destruction in the shortest possible time of as many Jews as possible..."
This is far from the first NYT article reporting it.
There were public warnings nearly a year ago about what would come, in the event of war.

I ownder how the almighty New York Times picked out the 100 neediest in a city the size of New York? The answer was probably presented in the Sunday, Dec. 3 issue, but I didn't post it. I did post a partial list of the cases at the end of the Dec. 7 post. My guess is that they asked their readers for sad stories of need in letter form.
