Census Bureau estimates show that New Hampshire's population has surpassed Maine's for the first time since 1800.
Both states now have about 1.3 million people, separated by a difference of about 6,000.
Kenneth Johnson, senior demographer at the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire, said the state's growth is largely due to more people choosing to move to New Hampshire than Maine.
Of New Hampshire's 89,000 new residents over the past decade, about 53,000 moved here. Maine's population grew by 43,000, with 39,000 move-ins.
For years, New Hampshire's growth depended largely on people moving in from Massachusetts, but recently our neighbors to the south have been staying put, Johnson said. From 2006 to 2008, the number of Massachusetts residents moving to the Granite State dropped by 34 percent.

Must be a mass transplant reporterette
People from Mass. should be prohibited from leaving. We need to keep them where we can keep an eye on them. Fellow Freepers exempt.
acorn?..........................
Those MA transplants are spreading thru New England like cockroaches. They’ve already destroyed VT, trying now for ME and NH. Pity, that.
My initial thought too. The libs (oops, “progressives”) leave MA and want the same services in NH. (seems the lakes region is the hold out area).
Although those from NY were among the first to move out to VT and NH.
As to ME, they already seem to have an above average share of liberal tendencies.
I too, didn’t want to offend any FR who still live in the area(s) but thought it interesting that the figures were put forth (even by the Union Leader)
Except for the cold, any smart person should move to NH. They spend about half the amount on government services than Maine or Vermont, and they seem no worse off for it.
I’d move back to NH for it’s cost of living factor.
(property tax would have to be considered first and figured in as to the area though...don’t even show me property looking over a puddle, hillock or stand of trees. (semi sarc))
Maine is filled with the ‘frozen chosen,’ people like Roger Angell and Charles Gibson.
