OMAHA, Neb.- Native American tribes tired of waiting for the U.S. government to honor centuries-old treaties are buying back land where their ancestors lived and putting it in federal trust.
Native Americans say the purchases will help protect their culture and way of life by preserving burial grounds and areas where sacred rituals are held. They also provide land for farming, timber and other efforts to make the tribes self-sustaining.....

Not to mention BILLIONS in gambling ...
In the end, they might buy back the entire continental U.S. and where will we go?
do they pay state property taxes?
If only more Americans would be as distrustful of the US Government, instead of trusting them with running healthcare.
Let the indians buy land the same way we do....in fee. AND THEY CAN'T HAVE IT UNTAXED. They are US citizens.
They've gotten away with an awful lot over the years because of our goodness. They followed the rules of "conquerer" when it suited them. They're like little sneaky kids...who don't want to do their chores. Too bad. They could have been great. Too lazy!!
Once gambling goes mainstream, the Indians will be back where they started from, hopefully with some more capital and the knowledge to grow it.
Socialism (tribal ownership/management) is not going to work any better for the Indians of today than it did for their ancestors.
Note that when a tribe of communal ownership Indians comes up against individuals in a free market nation, that which happened in the post-Pilgrim era will occur again.
Given the fall of the dollar, wampum probably has some value these days.
“do they pay state property taxes?”
No...not that I am awre of...they pay other taxes, but unless the property is OFF reservation land (hence the move to acquire more) their property is not taxed.
Hey Fish Hawk... I got several thousand acres of undisturbed land 42 miles west of the town of Klamath I’d like to sell you...

Okay, the first part of the sentence sounds encouraging but the ending shows that some people never learn.
The Winnebago and the Rosebud tribes are all over this land puchasing push...presumably to make up for the fall off in RV and Sled sales during the downturn...
LOL... I stole that and eMailed it back to my wife...
I prefer that the tribes privately buy land than have the government condemn and steal to give to them. And for them to privately buy means there are private sellers willing to sell.
This is an ideal win-win.
I'd be all for it, if they paid property taxes like everyone else...either we are in the reparations business or we aren't. I see no other term to use...it is neither religious or education based non-compliance...
I also know villages who don't have casinoes, Old grandma's that run the village say there won't be casinoes as long as they are in control. Same villages buy back land that has been sold off over the years to attempt to preserve their village, keep us Whites out for their own survival.
I know villages who lost all their land as late as 1940's to feds. The land is now BLM, Fed Park Land, ect. I could tell ya how they were driven off the land, Govt took all their kids and wouldn't give them back until Indians quit traditionally utilizing the land;;;alot of bad feelings still simmering against the govt over this. It would be much better for the govt to give the BLM lands back to Indians; let the Indians manage the lands.
I once had an Indian friend stay over. Have known this guy for years from another village 600 miles away. Back in 1997, he turned down 20 million over soveignty rights; I respect the heck outta him. He once told me that issue was the second most important thing he has done in his life. He said the first was preventing young members of his village from selling their lands.
I wish us Whites stood up to the Feds like the local Indians do around here. The feds don't want problems from Indians over it. We could learn a little from them backward Natives,,, if you know what I mean.
As another Alaskan I too have seen that up here.
