My next door neighbors have 2 of these dogs. 200 pounds but they are gentle, slow moving dogs, don’t live very long 8 years max.
Yes, they’re animals. They still operate according to rules. Their rules, but rules regardless.
The pack leader doesn’t randomly kill pack members. If he did, he would find himself in a single dog pack very soon.
A dog that doesn’t think you’re the leader won’t necessarily kill you, he will attempt to dominate you. If you attempt to fight with him, then he might carry if further. And as soon as you submit, he will break off his act. He won’t rip your head off. These are the rules of the pack. Without them, there would be no pack, there would just be a big group of dogs fighting and humping.
You’ll look hard and long to find a dog that will KILL its loving, gentle master, for no reason other than wanting to be alpha. It doesn’t work that way in the pack. Two dogs don’t tie their paws together and knife fight...animals know it is far safer to put on a display and gain dominance that way than going to the lengths of a real fight. Real fights end up with real wounds...real wounds can kill you real quick in the natural world. Animals know this, and instinctively avoid fighting. They also don’t kill pack members, even ones lower than them, for no reason. Try keeping order in a pack that is randomly murdered by its leader...good luck with that.
I would never have 3 dogs that large unless I knew how to handle them.
They sound like mastiffs, not bull mastiffs. It would be very rare for a bull mastiff to get to 200 lbs.
I have mastiffs and they are very gentle, and slow moving lazy dogs.
Bull mastiffs are lighter, faster, and much more aggressive.
Remember too that these dogs spent 4 years away from the owner. There was no longer a relationship there.
They are English Mastiffs, now that I think about it.

I always liked that quote as it rings true. Too bad it did not prove to be the case in this instance but I suppose there are exceptions to everything.

The correct AKC name is Mastiff. However, a lot of people refer to them as English Mastiffs.
They just got a new puppy, so cute.
I had one of those psychotic dogs. Got her when she was around 4mo. old. 3 vets and 4 behaviorists all agreed she had wires crossed. She was eventually put down because she thought biting people was the appropriate greeting. No amount of training was able to change that. It is rare, but it does happen.
I seem to be seeing more of these karma stories lately.
I just read Cesar's Way (the Dog Whisperer book) and one of the most annoying things was his insistence on the potential to rehabilitate any dog. There are so many homeless dogs out there, how much effort is it worth to try to rehab an aggressor?

Keep this in mind the next time you hear someone blubbering about having to put their dog down. Dogs are animals, not people.

I had to put all 3 of my dogs down in 2007. 2 from old age, 1 from cancer at 5 y/o. I shouldn’t be upset by that at all?
I blubbered a good bit that year, and not in the slightest bit embarrassed to say so. Doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten the difference between dogs and people, though. That’s just silly.
