While watching Pinocchio on Saturday night I kind of lost track of the story line. I am not entirely clear on how Gepetto, Figaro and Cleo came to be swallowed by Monstro the whale. Also, I believe the Disney crew took some liberties with whale anatomy and behavior. Other than that the movie is completely realistic.
Regrettably, Congo Maisie is not available from Netflix.

Really? Cause I never understood how Pleasure Island could possibly be a cost effective way of turning children into donkeys.

That is what makes these so great. This is the way the critics saw it when it opened, without years of being “a classic” behind it. Just like the knocks on Snow White — all accurate but we don’t care because it is so beloved.
Congo Maisie has an IMDB 6.3 (only only 114 votes, but still...): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032353/

And in 1940 very few films were old enough to be classics — maybe a few Chaplins and a few others.

The Film Industry was still very young then.
And Pinnochio was only the 2nd Full length Feature ANIMATED Film (after Snow White) so it was a totally new and crazy thing at the time. People still weren’t sure such a thing was even viable as an art form!
Those were the days when Disney was really GOOD!

I never understood how Pleasure Island could possibly be a cost effective way of turning children into donkeys. That is probably due to the influence of the New Deal. Cost doesn't matter - only job creation.
Hey, that Blue Fairy is sort of hot, don't you think?
