Woman killed by chicken crates

A 23-year-old woman died when a truck trailer detached, throwing 10 tons of live chickens in crates on top of her, Krugersdorp police said today.

The truck belonging to Early Bird was travelling on the R563 between Krugersdorp and Hekpoort when the accident happened at 10am on Tuesday, said Inspector Dennis Jones.

"A bakkie that was driving in front of the truck was about to turn left but allegedly failed to indicate, causing the truck to swerve to the right as it was too late to slow down," said Jones.

As the truck returned to its lane, its trailer detached and some crates fell on the woman walking on the pavement.

She was from Polokwane.

Jones denied earlier reports that the accident was due to road rage.

"Police officers who were at the scene said there was no incident of road rage reported in relation to the accident," he said.

Some chickens died instantly, while others had to be put down on the scene to prevent further suffering.

News24 reported on Wednesday that Early Bird's Barend Vorster said the truck had been on its way from the company farm in Hekpoort to the main plant in Olifantsfontein near Midrand.

He estimated the damage to be about R100,000.

He estimated the damage to be about R100,000.

How much of that was due to the woman and how much was the chickens?

Notice ... the coverage given to the state of the chickens. God help us if they die unhumanely while the poor lady is under ten tons of feathers, beaks and very quickly laid eggs.

Sad for the woman and her family.

Wringing their necks or chopping their heads off, but who ever thought they’d read that chickens had to be put down.

I am sorry for the woman and her friends and family.

Though the story did remind me a bit of C.W. McCall’s song _Wolf Creek Pass_.

"A bakkie that was driving in front of the truck ..."

English is a wonderful language but it does have colloquial variants. Since the article had "He estimated the damage to be about R100,000.", I presume that this happened in South Africa where they use the RAND as the unit of currency.

Anybody care to guess what a 'bakkie' is, other than a vehicle on the road?

You got it - think a very light pickup like a Ford Ranger.
