TRENTON -- A 78-year-old woman was mauled by her friend's pit bull Monday evening after she slapped the animal when he tried to get the ribs she was eating, officials said.
The dog's owner tried to distract the animal and throw cold water on him to no avail, then fled the apartment and called 911 when the animal turned to attack her, police and animal control officials said.
Six minutes after the attack began, a police sergeant was able to get the dog to drop his grip on the senior's right arm before shooting the animal dead.
Yesterday, Trenton resident Amanda Johnson remained in the hospital with a dislocated elbow, fractured arm, and multiple serious puncture wounds, police said.
"I've seen fairly large bite wounds on people, but this woman's arm was shredded," Trenton Bureau of Animal Control supervisor Joe Antonello said. "He basically shredded her right arm ... fractured the bone, a pretty bad fracture from what I can see."

Maybe she thought he was going for the one God gave her.
Here’s the other one.
Ain’t that the truth,,,
At 78 it mite be her last lesson,,,
Seems to me somebody could have put a blade in it in 6min...
Ok lets not even talk about this one, let just kill it. no excuses no crying about the poor little doggie, just put it down.
You should get a job and a family.
Chet posts current news/Truth,,,
His info mite save a life or a mauling for somebody that
doesn’t know the danger of these types of dawgs...
If you took the time to read the article you’d know the dog was shot in the head.
I am not sure why Chet99 is obsessed with this breed, but there is always more to the story than what is reported.
Any dog that is vicious should be put down. Unfortunately AmStaff’s have been maligned because they have been targeted by scumbags and trained (lack of training) or bred to be vicious.
Humans are as vicious if not more so than these dogs. If I posted article after article about the horrors of men, would you and the other ignorant people on here want to get rid of humans?
Why is anyone EVER surprised by these attacks? I have had other FReepers claim that they have pit bulls and that their dog would never do that. Bulldroppings! Given the right circumstances their dogs would attack as well. These dogs are a bad breed PERIOD!!!
While you are right, that many scumbags choose to adopt this vicious breed and train them to be agressive. Why do you think they adopt them? Why not a German Sheppard or a Doberman instead? Maligned, no way, pit bulls have a well deserved, earned, reputation. It doesn’t take a scumbag to make a pit bull vicious. The nicest family can have their adorable, friendly Pit Bull kill a child. I can honestly say I detest this breed of dog.
We do. It's called capital punishment.
Maybe the family could go adopt an Orca next.
Do some research and you’ll find a dozen more breeds used for fighting or trained to be fighting/protective dogs.
Problem is you never read about the Am Staffs that are friendly and cause no problems. That doesn’t make news. Nor do you ever read about the other dogs that bite people that aren’t Am Staffs.
And if Am Staffs are so dangerous, why do the scumbags that breed them for fighting kill the ones that don’t want to fight and are docile?
Some of you are such knee jerk reactionaries that you fit in with those on the left quite nicely by making ASSumptions before looking at the facts.
In Texas, we "get rid of humans" who commit horrific acts most days of the week. I can't tell you how much we Texans are deeply concerned....truly loss of sleep guilt-ridden, about those who consider us "ignorant".

History repeats itself. Thugs DID use German Shepherds and Dobies years ago, and the media and others were demanding the dogs be banned back then too. The same thing has been going on for at least a century, with even the bloodhound being a targeted breed during the 1800’s.
There are an estimated 10 million pit bulls in this country, making them the most popular breed in many areas. They may even represent as much as 60% of all medium to large breed dogs right now. However, the average number of fatalities caused by dogs has not had a significant increase since before pit bulls were popular. It has been the same for years, taking into consideration the increase in population of dogs and people, of course. If it really were a breed problem, the numbers would show this, but they simply don’t.
In addition, places that have banned the dogs have not seen a decrease in serious attacks, whereas places that instead implement responsible dog ownership laws have seen dramatic decreases in serious attacks. Irresponsible ownership is the number one cause of dog attacks, according to the CDC, the AVMA, and the National Canine Research Council. This is why no breed ban has ever been successful, and many countries are now repealing bsl and creating rdo laws.
Also, most attacks that occur do not come from dogs that are inside with the family. The vast majority come from chained dogs or strays. The dogs that owners claim are family pets are often found to be neglected, and sometimes have a history with animal control before the attack. I am pretty sure most people wouldn’t admit their dog had issues but they did nothing about it, because that makes them responsible (as well as making them look incompetent, lazy, etc.). Who would admit their dog wasn’t receiving the best care?
Still waiting for something other than media reports. Perhaps some new study showing for once and for all that pit bulls are iron-jawed monsters in dog-suits...or whatever the new ignorant catch-phrase happens to be, lol.
Seriously, we get news from around the world almost instantly. Somewhere right now, someone is getting attacked. There will be thirteen thousand dog attacks by the end of the day in this country alone, and the vast majority of those will be ignored by the media, witnesses, and people like you because they don’t contain that magic ingredient you seem to require.
The fact that the pit is the dog of choice in the ghetto should tell all of you something.
“would you want to get rid of humans?
We do. It’s called capital punishment.”
And still the south has high crime. It just isn’t enough to scare people straight. Prevention is key, but unfortunately no one here in the south seems to agree. Let’s just fry them all whether it works or not. At least we will all feel better knowing it’s happening. Same thing happened in the UK with the pit bull ban. They found out the hard way when their serious attacks actually started to increase that the breed of dog was not the issue. Several European countries have repealed their breed specific legislation because they had similar results. Places that have instead tried responsible ownership laws have seen dramatic decreases in serious attacks because they prevented them from ever happening by educating owners on what is required of them and what is unacceptable.
Obviously the old lady's fault. /s
Wow, is it just me or have there been a bunch of these reports in the news the last week or two?
I got in the middle of a dogfight one time that involved pits. I was at the local mountain bike trail winding down after a ride when this lady with a minivan full of dogs drove through the parking lot. I noticed her stop near the exit to the parking lot and I wondered what she was doing. Turns out one of her dogs jumped out the window and started tangling with three dogs that live up the dirt road. Two pits and a sharpei. The next thing I knew here comes her setter at full gallup across the parking lot and jumps in the open door of my truck. This poor beast was covered with slobber and blood and I could hear the woman screaming for help. Not exactly sure what to do I grabbed my .40 Springfield and a fire extinguisher and rode my bike across the lot to where the lady was. She was trying to pull another of her dogs out of the fight and I could see she had been bitten on the ankle and had peed her pants. I didn’t want to shoot some redneck’s dog for fear of getting shot myself so I hit him in the snout with a blast from the extinguisher. You ever seen a pitbull do a backflip? I have. The animal went from snarling fury to rubbing it’s snout in the dirt in about half a second. The other pit and the sharpei were skulking around in the nearby trees and I wasn’t sure what was about to happen next. So I gave the beast another shot from the extinguisher. The three ran off together and I went back to my truck to try and dislodge the setter. She loaded up her other dog and drove over to where my truck was. The poor woman was shaking like a leaf and clearly freaked out, guess I don’t blame her. I gave her the setter and told her to call the sheriff and report the incident to animal control.
We’ve had some issues with the dogs from that house down the road but that’s the first biting incident I am aware of. I think when her mutts started going nuts she should have rolled up her window and driven on. Bad choice on her part, but those two pits and that sharpei should not have been running loose like that.
None of these posted were “around the world”. All were here in the USA. I have not kept an exact count but isn’t it something like 15 or 20 in just the last month or so (the time that you and I have been talking about it) What exactly would make you wake up if you don’t count “media reports” as important. How else do you get your info? If we got one report every day of the week would you admit there may be a problem with pit bulls?
Media reports are inconsistent and often plain wrong. This is easily found by simply reading the differences in the same story compared to other news companies. You can also check with animal control to get the breed of dog, see if it has a history, what the condition of the dog was and its living environment, etc. You cannot rely on something so simplified and often wrong for calculations, not to mention the reports miss the most important details in their effort to create a ratings-maker.
If all thirteen thousand daily attacks were from pit bulls, then I would say there’s a problem. A couple a day isn’t even a drop in the bucket. However, the pit bull attacks make the news even when people aren’t seriously hurt. How is this fair reporting? What about the other attacks that send people to the hospital? Who reports on them?
I don’t rely on media reports because they report what they want, not everything that happens. Therefore, they are incomplete and cannot be used in any serious way.
Why wouldn’t you at least read the links I have provided? They are far more accurate than media reports, I assure you.
Bullcr@p, your likening us to liberals doesn't cut the mustard on this issue. Your precious little "Am Staff" is perfectly capable of making the news.
Over 50 breeds have taken lives, and every few decades a new breed is number one on the lists. It has more to do with popularity with the wrong crowd. Experts that have studied the numbers as well as the circumstances surrounding each attack have found a common thread that surpasses the breed of dog, and that is the care the dog receives.
Last year, for example, there were 19 deaths caused by non-pit bull-type dogs, and the difference between the pit bull attacks and the others just wasn’t there. They were similar in the care they received, no matter what breed was involved.
