TRENTON -- A 78-year-old woman was mauled by her friend's pit bull Monday evening after she slapped the animal when he tried to get the ribs she was eating, officials said.
The dog's owner tried to distract the animal and throw cold water on him to no avail, then fled the apartment and called 911 when the animal turned to attack her, police and animal control officials said.
Six minutes after the attack began, a police sergeant was able to get the dog to drop his grip on the senior's right arm before shooting the animal dead.
Yesterday, Trenton resident Amanda Johnson remained in the hospital with a dislocated elbow, fractured arm, and multiple serious puncture wounds, police said.
"I've seen fairly large bite wounds on people, but this woman's arm was shredded," Trenton Bureau of Animal Control supervisor Joe Antonello said. "He basically shredded her right arm ... fractured the bone, a pretty bad fracture from what I can see."

If you took the time to read the article you’d know the dog was shot in the head.
I am not sure why Chet99 is obsessed with this breed, but there is always more to the story than what is reported.
Any dog that is vicious should be put down. Unfortunately AmStaff’s have been maligned because they have been targeted by scumbags and trained (lack of training) or bred to be vicious.
Humans are as vicious if not more so than these dogs. If I posted article after article about the horrors of men, would you and the other ignorant people on here want to get rid of humans?
Why is anyone EVER surprised by these attacks? I have had other FReepers claim that they have pit bulls and that their dog would never do that. Bulldroppings! Given the right circumstances their dogs would attack as well. These dogs are a bad breed PERIOD!!!
While you are right, that many scumbags choose to adopt this vicious breed and train them to be agressive. Why do you think they adopt them? Why not a German Sheppard or a Doberman instead? Maligned, no way, pit bulls have a well deserved, earned, reputation. It doesn’t take a scumbag to make a pit bull vicious. The nicest family can have their adorable, friendly Pit Bull kill a child. I can honestly say I detest this breed of dog.

Maybe the family could go adopt an Orca next.
Do some research and you’ll find a dozen more breeds used for fighting or trained to be fighting/protective dogs.
Problem is you never read about the Am Staffs that are friendly and cause no problems. That doesn’t make news. Nor do you ever read about the other dogs that bite people that aren’t Am Staffs.
And if Am Staffs are so dangerous, why do the scumbags that breed them for fighting kill the ones that don’t want to fight and are docile?

In Texas, we "get rid of humans" who commit horrific acts most days of the week. I can't tell you how much we Texans are deeply concerned....truly loss of sleep guilt-ridden, about those who consider us "ignorant".

History repeats itself. Thugs DID use German Shepherds and Dobies years ago, and the media and others were demanding the dogs be banned back then too. The same thing has been going on for at least a century, with even the bloodhound being a targeted breed during the 1800’s.
There are an estimated 10 million pit bulls in this country, making them the most popular breed in many areas. They may even represent as much as 60% of all medium to large breed dogs right now. However, the average number of fatalities caused by dogs has not had a significant increase since before pit bulls were popular. It has been the same for years, taking into consideration the increase in population of dogs and people, of course. If it really were a breed problem, the numbers would show this, but they simply don’t.
In addition, places that have banned the dogs have not seen a decrease in serious attacks, whereas places that instead implement responsible dog ownership laws have seen dramatic decreases in serious attacks. Irresponsible ownership is the number one cause of dog attacks, according to the CDC, the AVMA, and the National Canine Research Council. This is why no breed ban has ever been successful, and many countries are now repealing bsl and creating rdo laws.
Also, most attacks that occur do not come from dogs that are inside with the family. The vast majority come from chained dogs or strays. The dogs that owners claim are family pets are often found to be neglected, and sometimes have a history with animal control before the attack. I am pretty sure most people wouldn’t admit their dog had issues but they did nothing about it, because that makes them responsible (as well as making them look incompetent, lazy, etc.). Who would admit their dog wasn’t receiving the best care?
Still waiting for something other than media reports. Perhaps some new study showing for once and for all that pit bulls are iron-jawed monsters in dog-suits...or whatever the new ignorant catch-phrase happens to be, lol.
Seriously, we get news from around the world almost instantly. Somewhere right now, someone is getting attacked. There will be thirteen thousand dog attacks by the end of the day in this country alone, and the vast majority of those will be ignored by the media, witnesses, and people like you because they don’t contain that magic ingredient you seem to require.
The fact that the pit is the dog of choice in the ghetto should tell all of you something.

And still the south has high crime. It just isn’t enough to scare people straight. Prevention is key, but unfortunately no one here in the south seems to agree. Let’s just fry them all whether it works or not. At least we will all feel better knowing it’s happening. Same thing happened in the UK with the pit bull ban. They found out the hard way when their serious attacks actually started to increase that the breed of dog was not the issue. Several European countries have repealed their breed specific legislation because they had similar results. Places that have instead tried responsible ownership laws have seen dramatic decreases in serious attacks because they prevented them from ever happening by educating owners on what is required of them and what is unacceptable.
