Wow. Thanks for the post. Just think, some school districts are replacing History classes for “Current Events”. What’s the old saying, “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it”?

Man, these Sunday editions are astounding.

They're fun to put together. It takes a while to scroll through Sunday editions because I don't want to overlook a gem of an article in News of the Week in Review, NYT Magazine, Sunday Review of Books, or even Rotogravure. (That one depends in part on the fiche quality.) They also have an expanded entertainment section that I haven't used yet. Not to mention business, real estate, travel, etc.

Editing is harder than I thought!

Yep. According to his wikipedia blurb Herr Tolischus will shortly be invited to get the hell out of Germany. I don't know whether the Times will make an announcement or we will just stop seeing his byline from Berlin. It may have already happened. I looked through my unposted articles (I have them through March 24) and didn't see his name on stories filed from Berlin.

What cost $884 in 1940 would cost $13377.15 in 2009

Add in air conditioning, power brakes and steering, airbags, catalytic converter, etc, and the price of cars really hasn’t changed much.

I did a quick search and found the New York Times Archive site (I can search headlines, but would have to subscribe to download them which I'm not sure I want to do).

I found a few more Berlin Headlines by him but he is almost out of there. Here's what I found.

NAZIS STRESS AIM TO GET 'FREE SEA'; All Leaders Say They Do Not Plan German Rule, So Will Not Clash With U.S. HULL'S POLICY CONDEMNED Newspaper Says Our System of Reciprocal Trade Is No Aid to 'Dispossessed' States

By OTTO D. TOLISCHUS Wireless to THE NEW YORK TIMES.
March 7, 1940, Thursday

NAZI TO VISIT ROME; Ribbentrop Will Confer With Mussolini, Ciano on Italy's Policy SVINHUFVUD IS IN BERLIN Germans Say Interest in Any Peace Moves Is Passive-- Officials Are Reticent

By OTTO D. TOLISCHUS Wireless to THE NEW YORK TIMES.
March 9, 1940, Saturday

HITLER TO AMPLIFY NAZI POLICY TODAY; Berlin Speech Is Expected to Clarify Stand--Nazis Look Hopefully to Rome

By OTTO D. TOLISCHUS Wireless to THE NEW YORK TIMES.
March 10, 1940, Sunday

There is then a gap in his reporting and then this one pops up with him reporting from Copenhagen, Denmark

DANES TO INCREASE TAX BURDENS 16%; Heavy Imposts, Part of War's Cost to Neutrals, Fail to Balance Huge Budget PEOPLE FEAR FOR FUTURE Nation, Squeezed Between Big Powers, Is Most Menaced of All Small States

By OTTO D. TOLISCHUS Wireless to THE NEW YORK TIMES.
March 27, 1940, Wednesday

A couple days later there are a few days worth of reports in Oslo, Norway and then he begins reporting from Stockholm,Sweden. I bet he almost felt as if the Nazi's were following him. Kind of ironic that he ends up in a Japanese POW camp.

By the way this is the first time I've looked at the New York Times site to see if they had an archive and at first look it appears to be pretty complete. I wonder if this is something useful for gathering the thread's materials. Like I said, I wouldn't know how good the information on the site or if it is in original format (Remember the UK Telegraph stuff I was posting was just retyped). Might be worth looking into.

http://worldwar2daybyday.blogspot.com/2010/03/day-185-march-3-1940.html

Day 185 March 3, 1940

Churchill’s disinformation pays off. Luftwaffe bombs Southampton when liner Queen Elizabeth is due to arrive. Instead she is headed West to USA.

Finland. Soviet troops continue attacking across frozen Viipuri Bay. They reinforce the beachhead on the Western shore of the bay and take another island, Uuras. Finnish Commander-in-Chief dishonorably discharges General Wallenius who has failed to organize a defense of Viipuri Bay (he lost his nerve and remained drunk at HQ). He appoints Lieutenant-General Lennart Oesch to replace Wallenius in command of the Coastal Group to defend Viipuri from the ice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baryshevo,_Leningrad_Oblast

Cruiser HMS York stops German steamer Arucas, 50 miles South of Iceland. The crew scuttles Arucas (3 lives lost). York rescues 39 survivors who will be landed at Kirkwall, Scotland on March 10.

U-29 lays mines in Bristol Channel; British steamer SS Cato hits one and sinks (13 lives lost). 2 survivors are rescued by minesweeper HMS Akita.
