Giant owl escapes in England

LOWER STRATTON, England, - Authorities in southwest England are warning residents to be on the lookout for a giant owl that may be hungry enough to make a meal of their pet cat or dog.

The European eagle owl escaped Sunday from its enclosure in the back garden of a home in Lower Stratton, near Swindon, The Times of London Online reports.

"The owner went into the enclosure and the owl flew at him," says a spokeswoman for Wiltshire police.

The spokeswoman said the owl, which has a six-foot wingspan, is unlikely to attack humans because it was bred in captivity.

"But it could try to carry off a cat or small dog," she said. "If anyone spots the owl they should contact police and we will send an appropriate team."

A large owl landed on a tree near the sliding door to my deck. The owl stared at me as I looked at it through the glass door. I am not sure about its size because it was dark. As soon as I opened the door, the owl flew away. I was concerned because my dog (American cocker about 30 lbs.) was running in my fenced yard. My wife was not concerned but I felt that perhaps the owl might attack my dog.

Amusing. In the HP role playing board I frequent, my character used an eagle-owl for his mail delivery.

THOSE eyes say, “I’m your new crazy girlfriend. I promise not to stalk you nearly as much as that guy I was accused of killing.”

I had an encounter with a huge owl very late at night while driving home. He was on the road and took off just as I got to him. The wingspan completely covered my windshield for a minute or so, and then he rolled over the top of the car and dropped behind me.

I considered getting out to see if he was injured, but then thought maybe not. He was gone the next morning.

The land I used to own here in WA had spotted owls and
1 horned owl. They compete with the coyotes for the mice
rabbits cats and whatnot. I could watch them swoop from
the living room windows. Magnificent animals.

“I found him a couple of years later dead under a power line. He had caught a large snake and had tried eating it while perched on the pole, the snake dangled onto the hot line a killed them both.”

Yes officer, that’s my story and I’m stickin to it.

I had two bald eagles watching my new puppy in the yard for about three weeks. She learned her bark and the eagles went some place else. I had the same concern.

What struck me was the absolute silence of it all. Eerily and absolutely silent. I’ll never forget it.

Years ago on a hunting trip, my brother and I were standing by a fire in otherwise pitch-black night. Suddenly, there was a sense (no sound) of something moving past us very close over our heads and very quickly. Had just enough time to think "what the heck was that?" when a rabbit let loose a death squeal as the owl grabbed it in the dark beyond the fire light. Took a little while for that adrenaline rush to die down.

My sister had a rabbit that let out a death squeal many years ago (I stupidly tried to introduce him to our dog. He was fine, just scared as hell). It isn’t something you forget, that’s for sure.

Rabbits are very fragile and squeal about death a lot.

It's like they were born to be killed.
