53 Cars Towed from UCF During Glenn Beck Event [ZOT!]
WFTV.com ^ | 3/30/10

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Dozens of people who parked at the University of Central Florida for an event say they were set up after their cars were towed. They said event parking signs directed them to a lot, but more than 50 cars in that lot were towed. People said those signs and their cars were gone when they got back.

A viewer contacted WFTV after his car was towed Saturday, along with 52 others. All of them were in line to recover their cars at an impound lot and all of them attended the Glenn Beck show at UCF.

The people parked in a Kappa Sigma lot. Mike Vedder thinks they were set up. He doesn't know if it was a dislike of the conservative commentator or money.

“Maybe the have a deal with the tow truck company or maybe they got kickbacks under the table," Vedder said.

They all said an event parking sign clearly directed them into the lot. Students at the fraternity wouldn't comment, but WFTV caught up with the owner of Orange County Towing and Recovery, Ronald Hulbert.

"I have a lot at stake, a lot invested. I'm not going to lose it over a $125 tow, times 53, times 53, it was a good day," Ronald Hulbert said.

Hulbert admits he's never towed that many cars in one day before; he said it took him at least eight hours to tow all the cars. Each driver had to pay cash, netting him more than $6,600.

Vedder also had to pay $25 for a cab ride to the tow company.

UCF said, out of 30 recent events, it hasn’t had a problem, but Vedder said this was his last at that arena.

“I won’t come to anymore. I'm going to tell everyone else it's not a place I want to be," he said.

WFTV was told to call Paul Gamble with Kappa Sigma, but he did not return any phone calls.

Why are you opposed to private property rights?

I'm not. I'm opposed to people defrauding others with impunity. Nail them.

53 people made that mistake?

That once happened to someone I know at a bingo game. Somehow the sign was covered over.

Parking on private property is almost always heavily restricted around a college campus and those private properties must have signs in order for the towing company to remove a vehicle.

It is not fraud if the owners of the property had signs that indicate that cars would be towed.

Unless the sign went back up after the cars were parked.

If that was the case, those who were towed will have to prove that the signs were removed.
And, I imagine they would have a tough time proving that.

It’s fraud if someone posts signs saying it’s event parking.

Having been in a frat, it is my guess that a rival frat posted the signs pointing to this parking lot.

However, the parking lot did have no parking signs and those who parked on that private property assumed the risk.

That may be.

But it doesn’t remove the cause for a legal complaint, which is that someone induced people to park in what appeared to be an authorized area, where they would be towed.

By turning a blind eye to this kind of problem, we open ourselves up to repeat occurrences.

Those responsible must be found, taken to court, convicted where possible and made to pay.

But it doesn’t remove the cause for a legal complaint, which is that someone induced people to park in what appeared to be an authorized area, where they would be towed.

And that is a whole lot to prove.

1. You would have to prove the the "Event Parking" signs were pointing to that parking lot.

2. If the signs were placed there in such a fashion, you would have to prove who placed the signs.

3. We know that the private property had signs that read "No Parking Without Permit-All Other Vehicles Will Be Towed."

4. You would have to prove that these signs were removed and replaced before the tow trucks arrived.

5. You would have to prove that the towing company and the tow truck drivers were in a conspiracy with the Frat Boys.

According to this article, Hulbert said it took 8 hours to tow all the cars .. how long was the event ? I can’t imagine it took more than 4 hours, including he waits in line and walk back to the lot.

Since you’re the lawyer for the other side, we’ll just stop the conversation here.

I repeat, the correct action is for Glenn Beck to find and legally nail the a$$holes to the wall.
