Burglar gets stuck in vent, later shocked with Taser

A burglar who wedged himself in a rooftop vent was later tased by police when he refused to follow orders this morning.

James E. Washington, 49, is now behind bars at the Orange County Jail and facing charges of burglary of a structure and resisting an officer without violence. His bond is set at $3,600, jail records show.

A witness told police he had seen Washington removing copper wiring from the side of a building in the 300 block of N. Orange Blossom Trail sometime around 2:13 a.m.

When police arrived, they spotted Washington walking along the roof of the building. Officers then surrounded the building.

They could see Washington trying to pry open a skylight. He was unable to open it so he started to crawl through an air vent, but got stuck — with only his legs hanging out of the vent.

He finally managed to wriggle out, but police already were on the roof. Police told him to lie on the roof and show his hands, but he refused.

The police report shows the officer fired his Taser at Washington and later detained him. Officers recovered burglary tools and copper wiring form Washington's black bag.

Not sporting. He should have at least been able to run a little first.
