New Stringent Appliance Standards for Home Water Heaters and Other Heating Products
Environmental Resource Center ^ | 4/5/2010

Posted on 04/11/2010 5:46:07 PM PDT by EBH

DOE’s Secretary Steven Chu has announced the Department has finalized higher energy efficiency standards for a key group of heating appliances that will together save consumers up to $10 billion and prevent up to 164 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions over 30 years. These new standards—for residential water heaters, pool heaters, and direct heating equipment such as gas fireplaces—will reduce air pollution, prevent the release of harmful nitrogen oxides and mercury, and avoid emissions equivalent to taking 46 million cars off the road for one year.

“These energy-conserving appliance standards are a critical part of the Administration’s overall efforts to save energy in homes and businesses nationwide,” said Secretary Chu. “By raising the energy efficiency requirements of our everyday appliances, we will save money for American families and companies, reduce carbon pollution, and enhance our energy security for decades to come.”

The standards released on Wednesday increase the stringency of the existing minimum conservation standards for these three types of residential heating products, which account for about 18% of energy use in homes across the country. The standards will significantly reduce energy consumption by these products, including decreasing energy use in large electric storage water heaters by 47% and by more than 30% in large gas water heaters. The standards for water heaters will go into effect in 2015, while the standards for pool heaters and direct heating equipment—including gas-fired wall, floor and hearth heaters—will apply to products manufactured in 2013 and beyond.

Under the Obama Administration, the DOE has accelerated the pace for finalizing new appliance standards and has placed new resources and emphasis behind the enforcement of these important standards. Since President Obama came to office, DOE has issued or codified new efficiency standards for more than twenty different products, which will save consumers between $250 and $300 billion on their energy bills through 2030:

* March 2009 – 14 consumer and commercial products with standards prescribed in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA 2007), including dishwashers, general service incandescent lamps, and residential clothes washers * April 2009 – Microwaves, kitchen ranges, and ovens * July 2009 – General service fluorescent lamps and incandescent reflector lamps * July 2009 – Commercial heating, air-conditioning, and water-heating equipment * August 2009 – Beverage vending machines * December 2009 – Commercial clothes washers * February 2010 – Small electric motors * March 2010 – Residential water heaters, direct heating equipment, and pool heaters

To ensure that the appliance standards are as effective as possible, DOE will continue to work aggressively and consistently to enforce energy efficiency standards across the country.

People will read this edict and think, "Oh, they have designed a water heater that will save me money. I'd like to buy one!"

Stupid people won't realize that the technology doesn't exist yet and may not in the future yet this edict will make it law.

I hate these people in the WH.

Solar water heaters are becoming more popular here in Florida. A friend says he expects to pay his off in a year with the savings.

Of course you still have to have the other kind to augment it.

prevent up to 164 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions over 30 years

And we need to do that why, exactly? I mean, now that the man-made global warming agenda has been thoroughly debunked.

Oh, that's right. 95% of climate scientists still agree with the basic global warming scenario. At least that's what the Obama administration and the NYT say. I'll be more impressed when they show us the names and credentials. (Funny, they never do that).

The hot water runs out too fast now. Mess with my shower and I might be forced to raise a massive stink.

Every time the scumbags come up with stuff like this it reminds me to go gather some more firewood for next winter. I love the smell of wood smoke drifting through the sky and over the trees.

There is old example of envirostupidity in NYC.
They changed all the toilets for “water saving” toilets.
The result?
Clugged sewer drains, now they have to flush twice to get the sheeet moving = more water used than before.
Brilllliant politican’s “solution”, sheeeesht!

May save money energy wise, but what kind of price tag are we talking about to buy these things? Everything they do in Washington is costing citizens money one way or another.

Oh, really? Is there a provision for DOE shotguns tucked into the Healthcare Bill?

See how the left works? On the one hand, they are throwing compact fluorescent lights at us and almost demand that we use them despite the fact they each have mercury in them. On the other hand “improvements” are forced on us in order to “protect the environment” by reducing mercury. Go figure.

Point taken about having a tankfull in the event of an emergency. My point is in regards to the efficiency of only heating water when you need it, always having 'enough hot water' and having what amounts to 'instant-on' hot water.

Having extra water for emergency events is an important consideration.
When/If that happens and gas & electric are not available, then either solar power heaters or propane might be the answer. A fire works also.

This won’t make a dent in carbon dioxide emissions. The rest of the world will negate whatever we do a million times over. Think China and India. They will follow what we do....yeah right.

Better yet.

In a town in upstate NY, septic tanks were replaced with a sewer system. The system built was too big so now they have to dump tons of dry dog food in there due to lack of bacteria.
