Supposedly, the concentration of galaxies is such that a grain of sand held at arm’s length will block out a few thousand galaxies, a thumb 1 million.

Perhaps they mean if you assume a galaxy traveling to the “right” at 100,000 mps, and a galaxy traveling to the “left” also at 100,000 mps. The cumulative rate of separation between the two galaxies would exceed the speed of light though neither galaxy itself violates the speed limits. The light from neither galaxy could ever catch up to the other.
Thank you so much for the post...The Hubble is amazing in what we now know about the universe and see.
That was a fantastic video and It shows what well spent American Taxpayer dollars can do.
Unfortunately the Resident clown is killing the space shuttle program so there will be NO further maintainance or improvements done to the Hubble so there is No telling how long it will remain functional.
One good thing though is that these Astronomers will have plenty of data to go through for years to come pending the launch of the James Webb Space telescope.
That telescope should be really awesome once its eye is opened.
That new IMAX 3D Hubble movie is supposed to be spectacular.

Ah yes, what happens is that
though the galaxies may be moving away from each other
at a speed greater than the speed of light
relative to a third observer,
the two galaxies would actually
see each other moving at a speed
less than the speed of light,
but the measure of distance itself would contract...
and the light each galaxy sent to the other
would be red shifted

Lets hope the James Webb Space telescope’s unique heat sheild opens up properly.
The have had plenty of time to make sure it does though.
How long now has this thing been in the planning stages?
