More Americans are following the lead of President and Michelle Obama when it comes to naming their daughters, the Social Security Administration said Friday.

"Maliyah," a version of the name "Malia" that the president and first lady gave their oldest daughter, made the biggest jump in popularity among girls names in 2009, moving 342 spots up to No. 296.

The name "Malia" moved up 153 spots to No. 192.

Meanwhile, "Sasha," the name of the Obamas' younger daughter, came in at No. 261 - having moved up 101 spots.

There was no bounce for the first lady: The name "Michelle" actually dropped one spot to No. 104.(continued)

I found it interesting to find out what Malia meant. It was just a thread saying more parents are naming their children after those girls. It is no big deal. If you are so concerned about conservatives looking like idiots & having time on their hands maybe you ought to go to this thread & complain.

Are you talking to the reporterette at seeBS news or me? I posted a thread linked to their inane little article, which they wrote, not me. My point is that they wasted a jourbalist’s time with this instead of the rotten fish which is the Obama regime. Get it? I didn’t “pick” on Mr. Obama’s precious little daughters, even though there’s no quarter given to Governor Palin’s children by the media and Democrats, is there? And she’s not even in public office anymore!!

To be expected when famous people’s children are famous, too. More of an observation than actual news. Wonder what the author got paid for the article?

I thought “Michelle” meant “bitter queen.”

"Geez who could possibly have so much time on their hands that they care about the kids names. If you do happen to have that much time on your hands please use it consider how garbage like this makes conservatives look like idiots..."

Who knew CBS News was made up of "conservatives?" So Dan Rather was right about why he was fired? When did that happen?

The girls are the more pleasant aspect of this regime. Poor things, it can’t be easy having a self important, narcissistic ice cube for a father.

Maybe or could be Maria. They may have just liked the name. Out of 4 of my natural children 3 have family names. My youngest at 10 yrs old would love to change her name. It is Michaelee. You pronounce it Michael Lee & I am glad I named her for my sister who has since passed. My grandfather was named Michael & all of his 1st born grandchildren were named after him. And the first ones were all girls! So we have all kinds of Michael names lol. We call her Sassy & that fits her really well.

I read/listen/watch as little as possible about Michelle and her daughters. They weren’t elected to any office that I’m aware of and should have absolutely no say in any government policies.

I just coped what I read. I thought Michelle was from Michael as I have a cousin named for my grandfather Michael. If I was snarky I could say it meant Wookie lol.

Why be so boring and name them ‘Malia’ and ‘Sasha’ when you could have gone with something more memorable like ‘JoyceLYnn Arian Nation’ and ‘Honszlynn Hinler’.

What could be better than that if you want to give your children the best possible start in life?

I actually, and my mom said this too, think both names are cute, pretty names. However, I do not think I would personally use the names for my own kids.

I think “Malia” is a nativist version of “Maria” or Mary”

At least he didn’t name either of his daughters “Stanley”
