More Americans are following the lead of President and Michelle Obama when it comes to naming their daughters, the Social Security Administration said Friday.
"Maliyah," a version of the name "Malia" that the president and first lady gave their oldest daughter, made the biggest jump in popularity among girls names in 2009, moving 342 spots up to No. 296.
The name "Malia" moved up 153 spots to No. 192.
Meanwhile, "Sasha," the name of the Obamas' younger daughter, came in at No. 261 - having moved up 101 spots.
There was no bounce for the first lady: The name "Michelle" actually dropped one spot to No. 104.(continued)

Your comment was pitch-perfect. Kudos!
How sweet.
I guess if you can’t decide whether you’re an Islamist or a Communist hedging bets with the kids’ names is one way to compensate.
Obama goes to bed every night laughing at these idiots.
Heaven forbid they use those electrons investigating Democrat’s complicity in the sub-prime mortgage disaster, financial crisis of 2008 or 2010 (pick one), the Blago scandal, Obama inviting terror attacks or Iran’s quest for nuclear weapons! No, let’s do a piece on how popular the Obama family is, even though they’re not!
Earlier tonight I named something “Barack” but now it’s floating with thousands of its own kind in a lagoon several miles from here.

“Earlier tonight I named something Barack but now its floating with thousands of its own kind in a lagoon several miles from here.”
Good... Real good.
Leave the kids out of it.
My favorite is “Phunkreshia”. Top that!
It is err.. was.
“Leave the kids out of it.”
What? I didn’t mention the kids...
Honestly I threw up in my mouth a little bit.
I don’t think I could drag my sorry but to naming my kids after any first family members.
I named my last little girl Tesla. She will turn 1 this next week. I named her after Nicola Tesla. He was a great man and a greater American. He stood for “real” hope and really wanted the best for his fellow man. Not this communist crap. He was a capitalist but not a greedy bastard. We should rely on names that mean something to us. The first family doesn’t mean crap to me.
I think that Melia is the Hawaiian word for Mary. Maybe they just used a variant spelling.
Yeah, leave the kids out of it. They wont be full Communists for another four or five years when their indoctrination is complete. Then we can let them have it.

Are you talking to the reporterette at seeBS news or me? I posted a thread linked to their inane little article, which they wrote, not me. My point is that they wasted a jourbalist’s time with this instead of the rotten fish which is the Obama regime. Get it? I didn’t “pick” on Mr. Obama’s precious little daughters, even though there’s no quarter given to Governor Palin’s children by the media and Democrats, is there? And she’s not even in public office anymore!!
To be expected when famous people’s children are famous, too. More of an observation than actual news. Wonder what the author got paid for the article?
I thought “Michelle” meant “bitter queen.”
Who knew CBS News was made up of "conservatives?" So Dan Rather was right about why he was fired? When did that happen?
The girls are the more pleasant aspect of this regime. Poor things, it can’t be easy having a self important, narcissistic ice cube for a father.
I read/listen/watch as little as possible about Michelle and her daughters. They weren’t elected to any office that I’m aware of and should have absolutely no say in any government policies.
I just coped what I read. I thought Michelle was from Michael as I have a cousin named for my grandfather Michael. If I was snarky I could say it meant Wookie lol.
Cheesy, Entertainment Tonight-style.
** snicker **
Why be so boring and name them ‘Malia’ and ‘Sasha’ when you could have gone with something more memorable like ‘JoyceLYnn Arian Nation’ and ‘Honszlynn Hinler’.

What could be better than that if you want to give your children the best possible start in life?
I actually, and my mom said this too, think both names are cute, pretty names. However, I do not think I would personally use the names for my own kids.
Any jump on the list for the name Omarosa?
LOL!!!!!
I think “Malia” is a nativist version of “Maria” or Mary”
At least he didn’t name either of his daughters “Stanley”
Both names are Islamic in origin.
Never thought of that. Damn!
the name of Mary mother of God and many semitic variants (Miriam, Mariamne) predates the new religion of “islam” by many years
In Hawaii where obama presumably spent some formative time, Malia is a Hawaiian version of Mary as brought by Christian missionaries
admittedly an odd choice for a man raised muslim
Glad I have no children.
I think you topped it!
Reminds me of that scene in Anchorman where Ron is dreaming of his future. He has two sons who are ironing their suits and they look at him and he tells them “No eye contact”.
Family names “suck”. I hate the fact that people think that we should have family names or they impose their name crap on us. I have 6 daughters and 1 son. I decided early on that there would be no real family influence on first names. There are a couple with middle names but I minimize that.
I have the most anonymous name on the planet and I don’t particularly care for it. People confuse me for my father and I often have to field calls for him from jilted lovers.
If you leave your son with a particular name you Better make it a good one.
Michaelee is a girl’s name & I didn’t mind naming my daughter for my sister. We call her Sassy anyway.
Wow! Bitter Queen! The fruit doesn’t fall far from that tree.
