Don’t forget about Misery. One of my favorites, and I thought the movie was pretty good, excet for a few parts that were not included.

Needful Things was a good movie. Amanda Plummer was great in that. The scene where Max von Sydow was listening to Ave Maria as everything fell apart was excellent.

King should invent characters, environments, and scenarios and then have someone else write stories using his components. He is incredible at a lot of what he does, but fails miserably in a couple key areas. Hmm, I guess he’s the Ron Paul of authors.

Have you read Swan Song?

"Lord, god we come a cropper!" "Discipline and control... these are the things that make a man." Haven't read this in twenty-five years, but I agree, it was up there with "The Stand"!

I guess we might as well start casting:

Roland - Jim Caviezel
Cort - Michael Chiklis

Any other suggestions?

Have you ever read his "On Writing"? He admits to (even embraces) the title of "America's schlockmeister", acknowledging that he writes some of his stuff merely because it sells and he has bills to pay

No, but that makes sense - in that regard he's not much different from other (late) pulp era authors. But he's also much more driven than the run of the mill horror guy, in one of the biographies (can'd remember if it was "The Stephen King Companion" by Beahm or "The Art of Darkness" by Winter) he got the question "Why are you writing this stuff?". Answer: "What makes you think I have a choice?".

But the Tower was started in high school if I remember, years before anything else. Be quite interesting to see if anyone can pull it off, it does certainly have enough content. Would probably be better as a well-done series than as two or three movie-lenght segments though.

Yes, I would agree with that. I like the movies though, even the really bad ones. Comparing some of these older, campy king movies to modern horror (anything past 2000 really) shows that the king moives are substantially better. Good horror is very rare.

Sometimes his stories fail or fall apart somehow. I have experienced this with reading King as well. Sometimes they really work though. He has one heck of an active imagination I would say.

Absolutley.

These days my tastes have changed a bit. I’m more into detective mysteries, thrillers .. Ridley Pearson, Jeffery Deavers, Connolly, etc.

At least a book a week, helps me escape the daily mud for a while.

After King’s okay to change the ending of the film version “The Mist”, I haven’t picked up a book of his.

I agree with others that “The Stand” book (the re-issue) has no peers in post-apocalypse stories (which I love). And yeah, Molly was a poor choice in the mini-series. I just realized a few weeks back that the actor who played Harold in the mini-series was Corin Nemec, of Stargate SG-1 and ScyFy channel crappy movie fame. It was one of those slap-the-forehead moments.

"Steven King is a real treasure, especially for those of us who like horror."

I am a fan of King as well but some of his books are downright horrible (though they are few) The real stinker of the bunch IMO is "Cell"...

Zombies created from cellphones?!?!?

Every time I see that book I think of this bit from Family Guy:

Stephen King: Now for my 300th novel, a couple... uh...
[casts about desperately]
Stephen King: is attacked... by a giant... uh... lamp monster! Oooooooo!
Editor: You're not even trying anymore are you?
[sigh]
Editor: When can I have it?

On the other hand "Duma Key" and "Bag of Bones" are some of my recent favs. Really good reads! Another dog IMO is "Lisey's Story". At halfway through the book I was hoping some huge monster would just eat all the characters just so something interesting would happen. Never did finish that one.

I love the Gunslinger series but a trilogy isn't gonna even get close. They made a trilogy of Lord of the Rings and it was just three books and they had to leave out chapters of good stuff. (Never gonna forgive Jackson for editing out the scouring of the shire which I always thought was the main point of the story. (You can't go home again, cause home is forever change while you were gone.)

Still I'll be looking forward to seeing it.

OK now for the next big question:

Who is gonna play Roland Deschain?

Maybe this guy:

or maybe:

Or:

Depp would be interesting, But Jackman and Owen have played more tough guys where Depp has played more cerebral type characters.

Is the series worth reading??

I’ve enjoyed a few of King’s books, The Stand, The Shining, but Carrie was awful!!

The casting of Roland, Eddie, Susannah and Jake will be key. Not to mention, Walter!

I agree with Caviezel as Roland (or perhaps Christian Bale).
Eddie - Josh Duhamel?
Susannah - Thandie Newton?
Jake - ??
Walter -- Mickey Rourke?

King has talked at length about the movies made from his books and how little he cares what they do to the story. In his view no matter how bad they are the book still exists and is available, and the making of the movies help keep the books available, and the book is what he wrote and cares about. To him the movies are basically ads for the books, ads he gets paid to allow them to make, so even if he doesn’t like the changes on a personal level he won’t say no because “the book still exists”.
