The is one rather extreme beer belly but how would one define a lot of weight around the middle. Does a small amount of fat around the middle count.

I’ve been told it does.

Indicator for increased chances of diabetes and heart attacks too, so I have been told.

Getting older is linked to dementia too and when people get older they often put on weight.

I don’t see crazy fat guys (dementia crazy) except for dirtbags like Ted Kennedy and he had brain cancer or something.

Generally, they are small, wirey, and freaking GONE!

It’s not necessarily the research, it’s the way they report it. They don’t critically evaluate the research, they don’t look at the research design, the validity, the reliability, the statistical significance. None of those things, but you can be sure other scientists do. The point is, they discovered a finding. The finding may or may not be generalizable to larger conclusions about Alzheimer’s. But essentially, it is what it is, nothing more.

I have not had a drink of alcohol in over 9 years, and despite my best efforts, I retain a ring of fat around the middle, so I resent it being called a beer belly. I suspect the only reason it’s called that is that it often occurs in middle-age men who like to drink beer, but that doesn’t mean the beer itself causes it.

Correlation does not mean causation.

Yeah- I don’t drink. I am still whittling away at a belly. Sigh! Life is not fair.

Actually to add insult to injury, I even eat “right”.

Actually unless I know someone is a boozer, I do not think of the term beer belly.

Do you eat a lot of sugar ? (Fructose)

That would do the same job.
