Two Ohio police officers were suspended without pay for six months after admitting they drove past a woman's body at the side of the road because they thought it was a dead deer, according to news reports.
The two veteran Cleveland cops, Matthew Prince and David Muniz, were sent to check on a reported body by a police dispatcher on April 5.
They called the Ohio highway department saying they'd found a deer carcass, but a disciplinary hearing found that they never stopped their cruiser to double-check what they'd seen.
GPS records showed their vehicle never dropped below 40 miles an hour while as it drove along Interstate 90 in the area of the body.
When highway crews arrived, they found the naked body of Angel Bradley-Crockett, 28.
A man and woman are now facing charges in her murder. The pair had allegedly lured Bradley-Crockett into their van after a car crash, where she was robbed, beaten and strangled to death. Police say they then dumped her body on the highway embankment where she was found.
The officers will get retraining and be reassigned when they return to duty.
But here's what's even weirder than that: once, while driving in Rhode Island, I noticed how there were dead animals all over the road. And Providence is in Rhode Island!

They didn’t mention the time of day. Interesting comment revealing that they track telemetry data on their vehicle via Satellite.
That’s what coming to all citizens if we don’t get rid of this joke of a government.
Until I read the part about being naked, I was going to make a joke about how she shouldn’t have been wearing brown swede and an antler hat.
That's a misnomer often applied to GPS applications. The satellites don't track anything. They sound out precision time signals, which give range to the sattellite. By tracking 4 or more sattellites, the GPS unit in the vehicle, or in your cell phone, and knowing where the satellits are, can determine it's own position by a process akin to triangulation, but based on intersection of spheres rather than lines of bearing.
In the case of the patrol car, the GPS unit tells the vehicle computer where it is, and the computer radios that in to the central facility. If you call 911, they can command your cell phone to tell them where you are. Unless you have that feature disabled, in which case they can do something very like the original GPS trick, but based on signal strength from various cell towers. Worst case they at least know which cell you are near.
I'd add that the GPS unit doesn't send anything back to the satellites. It can be completely passive.
For those that say taking drugs is a victimless crime, how do you explain this? How would legalizing drugs have prevented these two losers from doing terrible things?
It’s obvious they had a drug habit. If drugs were legalized they’d have even more of a habit. Why would they still not seek out illegal means to get more money and items to sell for money to buy more drugs, whether the drugs were legal or illegal?
People rob liquor stores all the time, and alcohol is legal? People rob and kill people for shoes and ipods and phones, and all those items are legally obatainable.
Was it really an accident, and the couple just decided on the spur of the moment to kill her after seeing her dressed up and bejeweled? Or were they out looking to cause an accident?

Santos was on probation when the homicide occurred. Davis was wanted on three warrants for failing to appear in court on traffic charges.
Santos' criminal history includes drug possession and escape. She was sentenced Aug. 9 to a year of probation and in-patient treatment for drug abuse. She has misdemeanor convictions for having an open container of alcohol and disorderly conduct.
Davis' criminal history includes trafficking in cocaine in 2001, drug trafficking in 2002, and a federal conviction for dealing crack in 2004. He served time in a juvenile detention facility, until he turned 21, for killing his aunt's boyfriend.

There's the real story. Why in the hell weren't these perps in prison? (Of course there are many here who would argue that they shouldn't have been in jail for drug crimes).

Pure, unadulterated evil.
Satellites are used to compute the speed and location. By telemetry I meant Speed and Location. I figured the vehicle kept track of it and broadcast it for monitoring.
“Telemetry (synonymous with telematics) is a technology that allows remote measurement and reporting of information.
Although the term commonly refers to wireless data transfer mechanisms (e.g. using radio or infrared systems), it also encompasses data transferred over other media, such as a telephone or computer network, optical link or other wired communications
Signals from satellites are used. The satellites don't compute anything. They just send out the signals. (Oh they do a lot of "housekeeping" based on information sent up from the ground network, but don't receive anything from the GPS navigation sets) It's a wideband spread spectrum signal, in the L band. The modulation on the signal allows determination of the range and line-of-sight speed of the satellites. From that the GPS receiver unit computes position and speed. Generally an extended Kalman (a Russian mathematician) "filter" (actually an optimal linear estimator, but the "extended" part makes it non-linear) is used to process the measurements.
The reporting of the position would be telemetry, by a strict definition anyway.
