25 Horribly Sexist Vintage Ads

by Oral Adams

Since the 50’s, a lot has changed in way of women’s rights and their duties in and out of the house. I highly doubt any company could get away with phrases like “The Chef [mixer] does everything but cook – that’s what wives are for!” nowadays. I haven’t been able to find my favorite—the old Mobil Oil add that had several women sitting together, one with a large bust, with the caption “We’re the sister with the added dimension” or something like that.

I would argue that we have learned nothing because today's ads are qualitatively the same; they simply reverse the ridicule and contempt. Modern advertising depicts men as stupid, venal, helpless creatures in the same way that these silly print ads depicted women. Who can't imagine hearing, for example, "You mean a MAN can open it?" in a new ad?

We've learned nothing if all we do is change only the target of our hatred and contempt.

Marrying foreign women really doesn’t work unless you stay in the foreign country. They become “americanized’ and you’re no better off at that point.

Any guy who gets his wife a vacuum cleaner for Christmas is freakin crazy. wow.

I did last Christmas, a Dyson, the central vac hose was a pain to haul out everytime you needed a small clean-up. She loves it.

Here's a local commercial from 1987 that was not only sexist- but clever, funny and prescient as well.

Some of the ads where women hit, kick, or do violence to metrosexual men are contemptible. A friend of mine recently said that feminism has given women a license to be as rude and boorish as men, especially in traffic.

Yeah, America sure has improved ever since women became empowered. The home has been destroyed. We’ve tortured to death tens of millions of unborn children. Yeah, it’s much better. /s

Back from the days you only had to dial seven numbers.

When my family got our first phone, our number was 72051, that was the entire number, if you wanted to make a long distance call, you had to dial the operator and tell her what number and city you were calling.

Anybody who wanted to call us from within the same town had only to dial the last 4 numbers. Our phone was a "party line" phone, which doesn't mean what you may be inclined to think. If the phone rang with long rings, it was for us. Short rings were for the people we shared the party line with.

That was about 1955, small town Missouri.

P.S. You could get any color phone you wanted, as long as it was black.

I remember the Longines ad from the 80s.

“That’s a nice watch he gave you.”

“Well I was hoping for a Longines.”

What a Bitch!

Not to the extent that it was continual ... sure, he lived with Cary Grant for a while but there’s nothing in his biography to suggest that it was a continual sexual preference. In any case, he is to me the ideal guy ... Ok?

They lived together for a while (ten years) but both being frugal at the time ... and yes, there was a ‘sexual’ thing between them but RS on the whole wasn’t ‘gay’ ... he still is a cool guy to me ....
