Denial of Service Attack on FR?
Alexa Internet Stats ^ | 6/21/2010 | Alexa

Posted on 06/21/2010 5:32:40 AM PDT by sam_paine

"A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or people to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely."

Just asking... Plenty of articles on here lately like the gentleman who painted a sign on a truck in his cornfield, and someone who didn't like the message set it ablaze.

If someone would like to reduce the reach and effectiveness of FreeRepublic 20% in a day or two, why bother with laws and FCC internet control etc. Why not just crash the servers?

During Limbaugh’s drug daze, I wondered what would happen to conservative leadership if he fell off.

There was nobody at the time who could take his place. What if Rush just “went Galt” at that point?

Now, at least, there’s Mark Steyn...he could certainly take over...but before that, we had a single point of failure in the network.

With all due respect and appreciation to Jim and John “Thompson” =) — There is no backup mirror. freerepublic2 on yahoo is the Mark Belling/Davis equivalent!! If either/both of those two gentlemen “go Galt” or just get fed up with it, that’s it!

There must be a mirror system, geographically disparate, automatically failing-over in real time.

When I say “must” it means that for better or worse, FR is not just a fix, it is a critical lynch-pin in the American conservative movement.

And thus it is a strategic target for the 5th column. And for now, it’s such an easy target.

agreed. Free dominion is out of canada at this time

Perhaps we need a parallel processing system outside of the reach of the US.

And a listing of us. In reality, If the governement wants to know who we are it can strain or has already strained our IP addresses.

In the "old days", many users connected to one another with modem based dial-in Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) using Fidonet. FReepers would be wise to familiarize themselves with both BBS ware and Fidonet.

What is the alternative for Conservatives? The Left has the Daily Koz, and the Huffington Post, and the DU to fall back on among other lesser web sites. All I can think of for a major live chat forum got conservatives is FR.

I agree. With as large of a readership as FR has, we must have a mirror site, preferably with a server that Obama can’t turn off.

Its war, its been declared that FR must be made impotent.

Now its possible Jim is just having some server problems but there is an area surrounding Fresno thats been under attack as well.

I think its no coincidence at all.

Its time for FR to get hardened, and I mean whatever it takes.

Yes the moderators have been a bit busy lately but thats because there has been a surge of incriminating comments that are worthy of drawing the ire of certain law enforcement agencies. An honest thread becomes hijacked with illegal directives, and it will get pulled.
But anyhow, from what I see elsewhere there is a desperation thats bordering upon outright panic from the left recently, everything they stand for is being exposed, and like rats in a bucket are jumping at anything to fight back.

It took 46 seconds to load the reply page for my comments. That is with DSL. I’m betting it will take at least 30 seconds more for the preview, and another wait of equal amount to actually post. This is worse than dialup back in the days of 300 baud modems.

Shortwave radio? One of my kids home school friends built a Ham radio, I don’t know a blasted thing about them. Range, Channels, needed power supply, ect..? Oh ya, to steel the early propaganda from the left- Think local, that’s where our power is. Local groups can unite with other regional, then national groups

I see this posted a bunch around here. And as someone who started with acoustic-coupled 300baud modems.....

IT'S NOT AN OPTION.

Finally, if we don't have phone number call-trees for individuals, who's to suggest that we'll get modem numbers down that can be swamped by DoS again anyway?

I agree. My pockets aren’t deep, but I’m more than willing to assist in ridding FR of the infernal and ever increasing outages. If it takes a pay site and logon security as good or better than online banking, bring it on!

Took 45 seconds to load the reply page. Not counting preview, any error corrections and the final Post. That is about three minutes per comment, not counting the 45 seconds for the initial page load.

Was part of Fidonet, and loved it...before Windows, and before we had internet access. Thinking back, it was a great experience. We learned all about computers from 12 year olds, etc., and even had friends walk us through hardware repairs on the phone. It was a great resource! Yes, we could go back!

I worry every time FR is down...not often, but still scary

Yesterday, especially, I wondered if the day without FR was something that would soon become months and years when the Obamists get their way.
