Don't Open That File, Memet!

NOTE: The following SNIPPET is a quote:

DON'T OPEN THAT FILE, MEMET!

With much fanfare, al-Malahim, the media arm of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, announced the imminent release of — and then subsequently did release — what they claimed was the first official English-language al-Qaida magazine. It's called "Inspire" as in "Inspire the Believers" (as opposed to the Quranic edict to Incite the Believers. They did this with the full cooperation of the administrators of the al-Faloja forum in particular.

Interestingly, the first couple of pages of the document appear perfectly normal. Then things get weird...

“Is North Carolina’s Samir Khan Behind New al Qaeda Magazine? Quotes Yousef al-Khattab (Updated, BUMPED)”

SNIPPET: “***Bumped***Scroll down for newer posts***”

SNIPPET: “But it’s more than just the layout and the fact that Sammy aborted his al Fursan project and has, in fact, left blogging altogether. Both of the publications seem to have an affinity for Yousef al Khattab and the small circle of his friends at Revolution Muslim and The Islamic Thinkers Society of New York.

For instance, one section of the new magazine quotes Khattab, “I love Osama bin Laden”. Here’s the screenshot:

The same section has a quote about the Islamic Thinkers Society of New York, “They’ve got an anti-Western, anti-democratic, anti-US, pro-al Qaeda message.” Here’s the screenshot.

Khattab, Revolution Muslim, and the Islamic Thinkers Society are clearly on the radar screen of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Since Samir is familiar with all of them, the simplest explanation for this is that he and his pals at the now defunct “The Ignored Pieces Puzzles of Knowledge” blog are behind Inspire magazine.”

SNIPPET: “It’s almost as if “Tarbiya” and Samir are keeping in contact .....

Let me also remind readers that Samir’s blog continues to operate on the servers of The Ansar al Mujhadeen English Forum (AMEF). A website dedicated to Salafi jihadism (al Qaeda types) but run by a number of Americans. Khan’s blog is the only blog hosted by the forum.

And the akhis from the Revolution Muslim blog take notice of the magazine, and post a lengthy disclaimer that they don’t necessarily endorse its veiws. Right, we believe that....

Also, Khan was an open admirer of Anwar al-Awlaki for years. Which would explain how the two became so chummy, and why Samir suddenly went silent last year.

The major news, so far, seems to have been that the magazine threatens the founder of Everybody Draw Mohammad Day. Radical Muslims threaten “blasphemer”? Yawn.

But if an American is behind an official al Qaeda magazine, that seems like an even bigger story. Especially since that American has been on the radar screen for years and years.

“Al Qaeda’s New Magazine, Or Was It Web Site, Or Is It Really Al Qaeda? Or... Or...”

SNIPPET: “The selection of authors (lots of celebs and relatively little from AQAP’s main leaders) plus the fact that there doesn’t seem to be any original material suggests that the person who assembled the magazine was not part of AQAP proper. In fact, the format of “Inspire” strongly resembles last year’s “Jihad Recollections,” composed by American jihadist blogger Samir Khan of North Carolina.

So assuming it is not a trap, a point which I will not belabor because those who think it is a trap are unlikely to be swayed by anything I say, the main question is whether AQAP formally endorsed the publication or played any other role in its publication. And to be honest, there is really only one reason to care about that question — “material support.”

When a lone American like Khan makes what is essentially a fan magazine about Al Qaeda, there is room for debate about whether he is exercising his first amendment rights. If an American like Khan is creating a magazine at the behest of AQAP or with its direct cooperation, that is material support for a terrorist organization, and as the Supreme Court recently ruled, exactly this kind of material support is appropriate for prosecution by the Justice Department.”

SNIPPET: “Leading terrorist cleric Anwar al-Awlaki has called to murder American cartoonist Molly Norris over “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day,” according to the NY Daily News.”

SNIPPET: “The threats against Norris were printed in an online English-language magazine called “Inspire,” started by the international terrorist organization Al-Qaeda. The FBI is taking the threats seriously, the Daily News said.”

May God inspire the FBI to arrest those (both here and abroad) who are inspiring jihadis to kill and/or harm Americans.

In Jesus’ Holy Name I pray this simple prayer.
Amen.

“Al Qaida’s English-language Terrorism Blueprint”
IPT News
July 13, 2010

SNIPPET: “Packed with detailed technical instructions, captivating aesthetics and extremist rhetoric, a new English-language magazine issued by Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) constitutes a recruiting tool with lethal potential.”

SNIPPET: “It offers, in explicit detail, a blueprint for planning and executing terrorist attacks while avoiding the watchful eye of the government. From ideology to execution, Inspire presents a total package for a would-be bomber.

This is the latest strategic move by AQAP, which has risen to prominence since embracing American-born preacher Anwar al-Awlaki. Awlaki’s speeches have played a major role in worldwide terror plots among non-Arabic speaking terrorists. These have included more than a dozen plots in Canada and America, England and Europe and even as far afield as Singapore. Inspire is the first written publication directly from Al-Qaida advocating Islamist terrorism for English-speaking consumers, with a glossy and easily readable text.”

SNIPPET: “The timing of the magazine’s release is consistent with AQAP’s shifting strategy, one that places a much greater emphasis on lone wolf bombers and broadening its focus toward attacking the West.

By publishing a magazine that includes detailed, English-language instructions in an easily comprehensible form, AQAP seems to be trying to give American jihadists a guide to which they can refer for both ideological reinforcement and valuable technical expertise.”

SNIPPET: “Homegrown terrorists have tried to offer online instruction guides before. But none had the reach or sophistication evident in Inspire. Awlaki’s charismatic preaching already helped fuel attacks launched by Nidal Hasan at Fort Hood, Faisal Shahzad in Times Square, and Umar Farouq Abdulmutallab in the skies over Detroit.”

“Americans must not be cowed by Muslim objections to cartoons”

By Kathleen Parker
Sunday, July 18, 2010

SNIPPET: “You may recall that Norris, once a relatively unknown Seattle cartoonist, was first threatened a few months ago by some bloggers on an obscure Web site, Revolution Muslim, for attempting to draw the prophet Muhammad. More recently, she has been named to an execution list on Inspire, a new online English-language al-Qaeda magazine, which aims to recruit American Muslims for jihad.”

“Former New Yorker Samir Khan behind graphics of new Al Qaeda recruiting magazine Inspire: officials”
BY ALISON GENDAR
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Sunday, July 18th 2010, 4:00 AM

SNIPPET: “A slick new Al Qaeda magazine written in English to lure U.S. jihadists may be the work of a former New Yorker with an eye for graphics - and a lust for American blood.

Intelligence officials see chilling similarities between a militant blog Samir Khan produced and the Internet-based magazine Inspire.

Khan landed on intelligence radar in 2007, when he was 21, after posting an Osama Bin Laden screed to the blog he maintained from his parents’ basement.”
