Don't Open That File, Memet!

NOTE: The following SNIPPET is a quote:

DON'T OPEN THAT FILE, MEMET!

With much fanfare, al-Malahim, the media arm of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, announced the imminent release of — and then subsequently did release — what they claimed was the first official English-language al-Qaida magazine. It's called "Inspire" as in "Inspire the Believers" (as opposed to the Quranic edict to Incite the Believers. They did this with the full cooperation of the administrators of the al-Faloja forum in particular.

Interestingly, the first couple of pages of the document appear perfectly normal. Then things get weird...

“Al Qaeda Goes Viral”

Washington, Jul 16 - By Peter Hoekstra

SNIPPET: “Inspire was obviously written by those who know American culture — probably Americans who have joined or have been assisting al Qaeda, such as Adam Gadahn, a California native now serving as an al Qaeda spokesman, Samir Khan, who runs a pro-al Qaeda website in North Carolina, and the terrorist cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.

Awlaki, who has been called the “bin Laden of the Internet” because of his adept use of Facebook, YouTube and email, is a well-known English speaking propagandist for al Qaeda. His sermons attacking American society and calling for violent attacks on the West already reach a large audience.”

SNIPPET: “Inspire won’t make sense to Western audiences or even the vast majority of the world’s Muslims. It doesn’t have to. This propaganda only needs to find a handful of individuals to launch terrorist attacks against the United States. If the magazine succeeds, our security will be put at further risk.”

Note: “Mr. Hoekstra, a Republican from Michigan, is the ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.”

War On Terror: In three short years, Samir Khan went from blogging about jihad from his parents’ North Carolina basement to editing al-Qaida’s new online magazine in Yemen — all under the FBI radar.

The 24-year-old Khan is now helping America’s Enemy No. 1 recruit Muslims to kill fellow Americans as Webmaster of al-Qaida’s splashy new propaganda organ, which provides instructions in English on how to “make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom.”And the FBI and U.S. intelligence never saw it coming.

The Khan case is the latest example of a disturbing trend in U.S. intelligence lapses involving radicalized Muslims. From the Fort Hood shooting to the Christmas Day airline bombing to the Times Square car-bomb plot, warning signs are ignored, dots left unconnected.

In October, Khan visited Yemen and hooked up with fugitive al-Qaida cleric Anwar Awlaki, another American terrorist turncoat. He was allowed to make the connection, despite sounding security alarms while living in the U.S. From Charlotte, N.C., he ran a Web site praising Osama bin Laden and calling for the death of U.S. troops.

He even made death threats against a private detective in Florida. The investigator filed a complaint with the FBI, but the bureau took no action. The known jihadist wasn’t even added to the no-fly list.

“How far does someone have to go before we take them seriously?” asked Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., who warned about Khan in 2007, only to have her concerns brushed aside.

Khan was exercising his free speech, she was told. Yes, he might have been promoting jihad, but technically, he wasn’t soliciting violent acts.

“American Al-Qaeda”
Posted by Ryan Mauro on Jul 28th, 2010 and filed under FrontPage.

SNIPPET: “The U.S. now believes that Samir Khan, a 24-year old that operated a pro-terrorist website from North Carolina, is in Yemen and acting as the editor of Al-Qaeda’s new online English magazine, Inspire. Khan had a well-known history of terrorist sympathizes that begs the question of how he was permitted to board a flight to Yemen and join the terrorist group he publicly admired.

Khan was born in Saudi Arabia and moved to Queens, New York City when he was seven years old. As a teenager, he attended a camp run by a group called the Islamic Organization of North America, which the Anti-Defamation League describes as “the North American branch of a radical anti-Semitic and anti-American Pakistani organization, Tanzeem-e-Islami.” The IONA’s website admits its links to Tanzeem-e-Islami. The IONA also had the leader of the Islamic Circle of North America, a group tied to the Muslim Brotherhood and Jamaat-e-Islami, give the keynote speech at its 2004 conference. The group also sells a book called “The End of Democracy.”

At this time, Khan became a more devout Muslim but distanced himself from IONA because they weren’t extreme enough.”

“Jihadist blogger thought to be creator of Al Qaeda website could be indicted on terrorism charges”
BY MEENA HARTENSTEIN
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Wednesday, August 18th 2010, 3:04 PM

SNIPPET: “A jihadist blogger accused of running an online how-to guide for Al Qaeda could be charged with terrorism very soon, sources say.

A federal grand jury has started reviewing evidence against Samir Khan, a 24-year-old who ran a militant Islamic website out of his parents’ basement, and is now suspected of being behind the Al Qaeda magazine Inspire, NPR reports.”

SNIPPET: “It instantly attracted FBI attention, and intelligence agents noted eerie similarities between Inspire and Khan’s own blog, “Inshallahshaheed” which translates to “A martyr if God wills.””

SNIPPET: “Authorities are now investigating if Khan actually left to join a terrorist group targeting Americans. They think he was recruited by Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S.-born radical cleric who has been connected to the Fort Hood shootings and the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a plane headed to Detroit.

Intelligence officials believe Khan accepted an invitation from al-Awlaki to come to Yemen.”

MYRICK: ‘Homegrown’ Terrorists Are Working Within U.S.
Charlotte Observer.com ^ | Posted: Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010 | By Jim Morrrill
Posted on August 25, 2010 3:35:44 AM PDT by Cindy

SNIPPET: “Republican U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick warned a Huntersville audience Tuesday about the dangers of “homegrown terrorism” and new Iranian inroads into the Americas.”

SNIPPET: “”I’m extremely concerned about Iran and the situation in the Middle East,” she said. “People don’t want to face the fact that we have terrorist organizations operating in this hemisphere and this country.”

Myrick, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said she’s disturbed by reported activities in this hemisphere by the Lebanese-based Islamic group Hezbollah, seen by many as an Iranian proxy.

Myrick repeated what she wrote in a June 23 letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano: that Hezbollah has increased its cooperation with Central American drug cartels and poses a threat to security on the southern U.S. border.

Myrick said she worries about Iranians learning Spanish and slipping through the border.”

SNIPPET: “Myrick also expressed her frustration with the case of Samir Khan.”

Charlotte-Area Representatives: A Look at Their Records
CHARLOTTE OBSERVER.com ^ | September 5, 2010 | by Ji9m Morrill
Posted on September 7, 2010 7:07:08 PM PDT by Cindy

SNIPPET: “SUE MYRICK, R

9th District includes parts of Gaston, Mecklenburg and Union counties.

Home: Charlotte.

Term: Eighth.

Top committees: Intelligence, Energy and Commerce .

Vote ranking: 34th most conservative member of the House, according to National Journal.”

SNIPPET: “The record: She’s a vocal opponent of taxes, spending and illegal immigration, with a voting record to match.

Last year she introduced the “10k Run for the Border Act”, which would have upped penalties for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. This year she chided President Obama for opposing Arizona’s tough immigration law.

In January, the House passed her amendment to bar TARP recipients from outsourcing new customer service or call center jobs to foreign companies.”

SNIPPET: “Myrick has made headlines for her increasingly outspoken warnings about terrorism and radical Islam. She has made online videos on everything from Sharia finances to the Fort Hood shooting.

More recently, she has been particularly critical of the response by intelligence officials to Saudi-born Samir Khan. The man who ran a radical blog from his Charlotte home is now believed to be editing an online magazine for the group al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

What her opponent says: “I just feel she’s out of touch. I don’t feel she votes for the people she represents.” - Democrat Jeff Doctor, Marvin.”

For The Record - The IPT Blog
“Hacking Terrorist Websites Commonplace”
by IPT News • Jun 3, 2011 at 1:32 pm

SNIPPET: “British intelligence destroyed several pages of al-Qaida’s first edition of Inspire magazine, in one of many instances of Western intelligence sources hacking into jihadi websites, according to Wired.com. However, the issue of disrupting jihadi websites and publications raises questions about the value of cyber attacks, and whether it exposes sensitive intelligence resources.

The case of the al-Qaida’s Inspire magazine illustrates the challenge to intelligence. “The head of the newly formed U.S. Cyber Command, Gen. Keith Alexander, argued that blocking the magazine was a legitimate counterterrorism target and would help protect U.S. troops overseas,” the Washington Post reported. “But the CIA pushed back, arguing that it would expose sources and methods and disrupt an important source of intelligence.”

“The proposal also rekindled a long-standing interagency struggle over whether disrupting a terrorist Web site overseas was a traditional military activity or a covert activity — and hence the prerogative of the CIA.”

Although the CIA won out and the proposal was rejected, British intelligence was already hacking the magazine. It took nearly two weeks for al-Qaida operatives to release a corrected version. In the political fallout that followed, House Armed Services Committee Vice Chairman Mac Thornberry (R-Tex) included language in the 2012 defense authorization bill which authorized cyber attacks by the military.

Attacks on jihadi websites are nothing new.”
