"American Idol" contestant, Ariana Afsar becomes new Miss California (Season 8 Top 24 finalist)

LOS ANGELES, July 11 (Xinhua) -- A San Diego semi-finalist on " American Idol 8" and winner of other beauty pageants was crowned the title of Miss California 2010 overnight, well on the way in search of the tantalizing title of Miss America in six months time.

Ariana Afsar, currently a freshman at University of California, Los Angeles, succeeded Kristy Cavinder, Miss California 2009 at a pageant held in Fresno, California on Saturday night. She has won various awards including a 25,000-U.S.-dollar cash prize in the junior teen Miss America competition and won the "Del Mar TV Idol" contest held in May 2007.

Born in October 1991, Afsar has been singing since she was seven years old when she discovered karaoke, then quickly moved to theater work. She was in the top 36 contestants on FOX's "American Idol 8." After failing to advance through her semi-final round, Afsar was given the opportunity to compete in the Wildcard competition but was eliminated.

Afsar was Miss California's Outstanding Teen and placed first runner-up in 2006 when she was 16 years old.

As the founder of Adopt-A-Grandfriend, an organization since 2005 whose goal is to help the seniors to get rid of isolation, Asfar made this organization a platform to challenge others.

Afsar is in a different system than what controversial Christian Carrie Prejean, Miss California 2009 is in. Prejean competed in the Miss USA pageant produced by K2 Productions.

You may (or may not, I had to watch her audition again) remember her as the high-school girl who sang “Put Your Records On” and had started an “adopt a grandfriend” program to help elderly folks in nursing homes.

Her audition went very well, earning her 4 yeses from the judges. Kara called her “cute as a button”

But a pitchy, awkward rendition of Abba’s “Winner Takes it All” during the week 3 semi-final round was universally panned by the judges and prompted Simon to say, “It was absolutely terrible in most parts, way too big for you…dreary arrangement”

I believe Miss California gets to compete for Miss America and then Miss Universe (??).

There are so many beauty pageants I’m not sure which is which anymore.

But Miss America is not simply about being hot but more...

Carrie Prejean was also Miss California but I believe she competed for Miss USA. That was when she got royally screwed by a totally unqualified judge, the gay activist — Perez Hilton.

I believe ( and still hope ) the Miss America Pageant is of a different class and won’t allow a pervert like Hilton to be a judge. For Ariana’s sake I hope so. She seems to be a nice, good and kind young lady.

It’s not as if they go around judging every girl in CA. Besides, she is cute. I would imagine she didn’t have to answer any queer marriage questions.

"Hottest" hasn't been a factor in kalifornistan's competitions for a long time. Now they only look for the one who gives them the most "politically correct" mileage.

It's like the Nobel Peace prize. It doesn't mean anything.

BTW, I am posting this for the many American Idol watchers out there.

Those who don’t watch that show won’t even know who on earth Ariana is, but those who do ( or did ) would recognize her.

Imagine that another Arab woman being suddenly vaulted above others. Although that may be a Bangladeshi name.

I am just saying...

Just like our congressmen, senators, president, etc. is this really the best America has to offer? In California’s case, can you be sure this wasn’t motivated by race?

again, just saying.

I could stand on the streets of any major American city at lunchtime and spot prettier girls than she.

As some have noted, beauty pageants really aren’t about beauty anymore.

You must have not ever heard of of Carrie Prejean

I looked at these pages :

http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/meaning_of_Afsar.html

and

http://www.babynology.com/meaning-afsar-f32.html

It seems to be the family name or the name Afsar is PERSIAN in origin (Farsi language). Which means this young lady’s ethnicity is Iranian. Persians are not Arabs.

No.

Miss America is a different contest from the Miss USA/Miss Universe ones. Miss America has traditionally included a talent component and some vetting for brainpower. I think.

I’m not the one who thinks Carrie Prejean is hot. Last time I saw a mouth like that, it had a bit in it.

I know persians are not arabs. Do you think the judges know that? I bet they don’t.

On top of that Iranians may be persians but persians lost their own unique identity when they became muslims.
