Minnesota crane hunt returning after 94 years
Star Tribune ^ | 7-19-10 | DOUG SMITH

It's official: Minnesota will have a sandhill crane hunting season this fall for the first time in 94 years.

The season will run from Sept. 4 to Oct. 10 and only in the northwest goose zone, which includes parts of about six counties in far northwestern Minnesota. The daily bag limit will be two birds, with a four-bird possession limit. Nontoxic shot will be required.

Why a crane hunting season?

Ten other states in the flyway already allow crane hunting, some since 1960, and Minnesota was one of the few holdouts. The midcontinent crane population, averaging over 450,000 birds, has been healthy and above goals.

"It's an additional hunting opportunity we can provide," said Bill Penning of the Department of Natural Resources.

If you’d like to be on or off this Upper Midwest/outdoors/rural list please FR mail me. And ping me is you see articles of interest.

I've read that cranes are good eating, almost like steak. I'm sure this is going to upset a lot of people. I hope Wisconsin copies Minnesota. Texans shoot them when they head south anyway, and why should they suffer the oil.

I’m told they’re excellent, but I’ve never tasted one. They hunt them in the south.

Yes, cranes are good to eat which is why the Sandhill Crane once was considered endangered. Market hunters(before regulation of hunting)just about wiped them out.

Spotted owl will spoil you for life, though. Bald eagle taste like chicken, in comparison.

Why a crane hunting season?

To create government revenue via permit fee's, the only reason for any created allowance these days.

Cranes are good sized birds. You can probably get more meat from a crane than you would a canada goose.

Country wide Canada Goose, open season, no limits would be fine with me..........and no restrictions on where they can be shot.

In about 5 years they would learn where it's safe to land and how to fly south for the winter.........

No, but if you like the taste of neck meat...

Hey, I’d give it a try if I was hungry. Or even if I wasn’t!
